Tallest Structure in Duluth
Here’s a question to contemplate: What is the tallest standing structure within Duluth city limits?
Here’s what I was thinking for determining this: The tallest height should be relative to the starting point of the structure in the ground. So a structure that begins on a higher elevation does not have advantage. Also, “ground” can be defined as the Lake bottom, so a structure could begin on the Lake bottom, but the footings (or anything underneath the ground [or Lake bottom]) wouldn’t be part of the equation.
The Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge is pretty high (177 feet), but other higher buildings and structures are clearly in view.
Looking to buy a starter motorcycle
My wife will be completing the motorcycle safety class and is in need of a used bike. She would prefer something modern, under 500CCs and not of the “cruiser” style. If you have such an item hanging around now would be a great time to trade it to me for cash. I have searched Craigslist daily and cannot find more than one or two suitable choices so I figured I would shake the PDD tree to see if anything falls out. Craigslist … is it stupider here?
Craigslist is probably a bad place to gauge the local intelligence of any given place, but after about two minutes of Duluth CL, the profound examples of improper grammar and spelling become overwhelming, like a Shitnami blowing out the manhole covers, so I wondered if Craigslist is any indicator of local smarts, or is just stupid, plain everywhere? Indeed, good grammar is only one form of intelligence, and may not even save you in a knife fight. Certainly the best example was not “looking for painter’s,” but this 1987 Harley was fun. Is there already a thread for creative Craigslist ads? And if not, why not?

Disaster Vultures Have Arrived
I just got the first call from someone trying to cash in on the disaster. Claimed he wasn’t trying to sell something and was just calling in light of the recent flooding in the area. (Right, that is why you are making cold calls.) “Brad’s tree and stump service” offering free estimates. I don’t see this business in the local directory and the number comes up from a cell phone and the name James Macgregor. We are on the freakin Do Not Call List, and our phone has an option that gives a message saying we do not accept calls from solicitors and you must dial one to get through if you are not selling anything. This person must have hit the one to bypass the filter. I would suggest we all be careful of unsolicited help and hire local! This is disgusting!

Does anyone know the situation regarding drinking tap water in Duluth/Superior are the flooding? Have there been any advisories regarding contamination?

DTA needs help on Restoration Project
The DTA (Duluth Transit Authority) has an ask of the community to help restore a vintage 1939 Twin Coach. This 1939 Twin Coach was donated to the DTA on December 5, 2001 by former Duluth School Superintendent, Mark Myles. The Twin Coach sat idle for many years in the woods before the DTA project assumed ownership and began the restoration project. When completed, the Twin Coach will be show-cased in local parades and events. Do you have time to help restore this 1939 Twin Coach? See Jim Brown at work during weekday mornings. Efforts are currently being made to organize volunteers for the coming year. Any donations helpful: tires, time, etc.

Duluth vs. Superior
On almost every point, Superior suffers by comparison. Duluth has 90,000 inhabitants; Superior has 30,000. Duluth has some of the most impressive nineteenth-century architecture in the Midwest; Superior is famous for asphalt shingles and insulbrick. Duluth is known for first-rate medical facilities; Superior has an oil refinery. Duluth has Spirit Mountain and a ski jump; Superior is flat as a turkey platter. Superior is clearly inferior to Duluth, but if you like an underdog, you have to love that town across the harbor. I sure do.

There is a lost or abandoned little cub in the Arrowhead/Swan Lake Road area. If you spot him, call Kelly asap at 218-591-2967, while not letting him out of your sight. Kelly and a vet will come out immediately to dart and catch him. We need to catch this guy soon; he’s tiny and has been without mom for more than 24 hours; he won’t survive for much longer without help. Thanks!
