Found dog
Found this dog running loose on Sixth Street and 11th Avenue East at about 1pm today. Male, no collar. We caught him, called the cops and he got hauled away to the animal shelter. Sorry, Mr. Husky! I hope someone picks him up soon. Super handsome dog, mouthy and full of energy. We would’ve kept him for the weekend but he was too big a handful.
DNT discontinues comments
Close readers of the Duluth News Tribune’s online edition may have noticed that the site no longer allows commenting under any stories, and I think that’s been the case for several days. I’m not privy to the reasons behind the decision, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the comments they were getting didn’t add any value to the site. Quite the opposite, in my opinion.
The DNT isn’t alone in this struggle. Personally, I’ve never seen intelligent comments on a news organization’s website. I think it’s probably better for them to just stick to content creation and allow people to link to the content via Facebook or some other social site, and discuss the content there.
What do you think? Do you miss the comments or do you applaud the decision?
80 Nerds in the Dark
I admit — I entered the Zinema’s “Doctor Who 101” with some trepidation. The organizer is the sharp, innovative Tony M., the real engine behind the Zinema for some time. (I know there was another architect, but frankly, some architects are engineers, while Tony is an artist, breathing life). (more…)
Bev’s Jook Joint for Sale or Lease

Well, here we are. We need more minions …
Two of them, in fact.
Who are we? An existential question, at times, but Raven & Associates, Inc. is a promotional products company (we sell stuff with your name on it) right here in Duluth. We are looking for two talented, skilled, and charming individuals to be part of our team. We are a growing company, a great place to work, and very odd.
Here’s what we are looking for.
Part-time position #1: Part-time customer service/office assistant.
Part-time position #2: We need a digital ink money, or to use another parlance, a person to run our digital printer.

Hell is Other People?
Last night, I had the pleasure of preparing a TalkBack session on the Stage II production of Jean Paul Sartre’s “No Exit.” (more…)
Duluthophilia
This popped up in my Facebook feed.
I mean, Master Card’s little contest might pale in comparison to the intense fervor, Duluthophilia, I call it, that some of us have for this town. Heck, this blog is basically all about how great we think we are (except for the bitching posts, which are still pretty much about how great we think we are.) (more…)
Duluth Beer Snob Blog
I was looking for some beta on the New Canal Park Brewery when I ran across this Duluth Beer Snob Blog. So it made me wonder, have we reached the point of Beer stardom where we now have the pinnacle of beer snobbery in town? Seems to know his stuff and he sure gets around the beer joints.
Who wins the Giant Foam Finger of Greatness?
A group of journalism students at UMD have created their own online journalism projects. The assignment asked them to conceive of a website that focused on a specific media “niche” and to produce content that appealed to that group by drawing on as many online media tools as possible.
The projects range from a Duluth-area beer-review page to a site that links volunteers with community needs in the Twin Ports.
Tomorrow we will have a very informal awards ceremony in which the page that has the most “likes” on our Facebook page will receive the Giant Foam Finger of Greatness Award (it’s a long story).
So, visit the page, check out a few of the projects, vote for your favorite and give the student journalists some feedback. Who knows, perhaps the best of them will actually develop into permanent pieces of the Duluth media landscape.
New Education Rabbit at Audubon Center for the Northwoods
We at Wildwoods are good partners with the education mission of Audubon Center for the Northwoods in Sandstone, MN. The staff there are warm, welcoming, and supportive, and have occasionally taken an unreleasable wild animal and given it a meaningful life as an education animal. Like this gal:
Five month old doe Netherland Dwarf and Lop mix. She will be representing a Eastern Cottontail rabbit since they do not tolerate captivity. She will be making appearances in MN Mammals, Animal Signs, and the Minnesota Wildlife evening program.
You have until end of day December 11th to submit a name for their new education rabbit. Visit their FB page for more info: https://www.facebook.com/AudubonCenter

Kids Bicycles and Parts
My rapidly growing daughters have outgrown numerous bicycles and I am wondering what to do with the collection of bikes cluttering up our yard.
Any better suggestions than donating to Goodwill etc? Wasn’t there a bike shop in the Hillside at one point that might take this stuff? Or anyone know how these could go to bikeless kids?
What’s the story on this place?
Ads for this place have been on Craigslist for a good deal of time:
Not that I have any interest in renting it, but it’s so … different … that I can’t help but wonder. An inspection via Google maps leads to some interesting scenery, and driving by it makes one even more curious.
Anyone know anything about it?
In Case You Missed It
This is too stupid to not let go unnoticed: Welcome to UMD. Again.
Thankful in Duluth — 2012 Edition
Not that we aren’t generally grateful at Perfect Duluth Day, but, well … there is a category of posts called “Bitching” and not one called “Jubilant Praise” (although maybe “Recommendations” covers that). Anyway, at least once a year we do throw things open for folks to comment about what they are thankful for in this world (or Duluth specifically).
To start things off, on behalf of the PDD staff, I’d like to thank the nearly 2,000 people who have blogging accounts on PDD and keep the online Duluthist banter going day after day — not to mention the thousands more who lurk on the site, read it regularly, but keep their thoughts to themselves.
We should all be thankful for zero losses of human life during the Historic Summer Solstice Flood Disaster of 2012, although quite a few homes and possessions were wrecked and a few critters met their unpleasant demise. And we should all be thankful the Leap Day 2012 Snowmageddon happened or it pretty much would have been a snowless winter.
But it’s good to be thankful for the little things, too, so I’m going to focus on Goo Goo Cluster pie.
(Here’s what folks on PDD were thankful for in 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004 and 2003.)
Help Habitat for Humanity get a family home for Christmas
Western Lake Superior Habitat for Humanity is looking for volunteers on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or any sizable chunk of time in there) to help remodel a home for the Christianson family. Construction experience is useful, but a willingness to help is the only requirement.
Families are chosen based on the level of need for decent housing, their ability to repay a zero-interest mortgage for the cost of construction (average $90k) and their willingness to help build their home, working alongside volunteers from across the Twin Ports community.
The Christiansons and their three boys and baby girl have been through a lot this year and our goal is to complete construction on the home in time for the them to move in to their newly remodeled home by Christmas. We’ll need lots of help from the community to accomplish this goal please e-mail Susan Marks at volunteer @ twinportshabitat.org, call 218-722-3875 or sign up to volunteer online.
Give to the Max for the Lake Superior Zoo
The season for giving is upon us, and today, GiveMN’s Give to the Max day, our hearts are filled to the brim with love for our supporters. Needless to say, this year has taken a toll on not only the physical form of our zoo, but the staff as well. And yet, through the clouds, rain, and mud, an irrefutable ray of sunshine has beamed down upon us. Whether through a child’s lemonade stand, a random donation, or simply an encouraging comment given to our staff, these gestures have truly kept us going through some of the darkest times in our lives. Sawmill Unpainted Furniture — what’s the deal?
I tried to go there over the weekend and even though it should have been open, it was closed with a “For Lease” sign. Internet searches have been unhelpful. Does anybody know what’s going on? I need a dining room table!
Yet another LPOE Post
Can someone explain the sign now in the window at the Last Place on Earth stating that on April First they will stop selling incense and start selling marijuana?
Eagles and Lead
Let’s start with the basics. A healthy, wild bald eagle will not pose for a picture like this. So the very existence of this picture means that this guy is in trouble. We think it is lead poisoning.
This is our second eagle this weekend. It looks like another case of lead poisoning. They’re coming in thick and fast. Please, all you hunters … use non-lead ammo. You don’t want to leave a dead eagle behind you in the field.
Lead poisoning is almost certain, permanent damage. Learn more.
Glengarry Glen Ross
Last night, Kate and I went with our friend and colleague Elizabeth to see Glengarry Glen Ross.
There was a time in my life when I liked Mamet plays — it overlapped sharply with the time in my life that I liked Quentin Tarantino films. And while Reservoir Dogs will always have a place in my heart, that place has changed. I now think of it as one of many average “double-cross” movies, rather than a pressure-cooker of male aggression. But when I was a kid, oh man, it was all about the tough guys. (more…)
