Duluth Demon

Just in time for Halloween the Duluth Demon emerges and has been seen lurking around UMD. It seems he was last seen terrorizing people in Bagley Park and has not broken character yet. An article from the UMD Statesman explains his presence. The demon can also be found on Facebook.

Pollution Prevention

It’s National Pollution Prevention Week starting Sept 15. How we dispose of things and what we purchase to use all matter. The city of Superior will be hosting a speaker night on Sept 17 starting at 6 p.m. at the Superior Public Library. Speakers on e-waste, pharmaceutical disposal, lead and children, household hazardous waste, and more will be there. Also, check out the billboard up on Belknap on the left side as you go over the viaduct. It has a stormwater message and photos. Keep storm drains clear for a clean Lake Superior.

Hey! Where ya taking that there dredger?

I’ve never seen a tug this far up the shore – photo was taken from the pier at Glensheen. Anyone know where they were taking this dredger?

Grand Rapids

Too far to be a suburb, too close to be another major metropolitan area? I spent Saturday visiting the MacRostie Art Center, Infinite Games, this tasty Chinese Buffet across from the Village Bookstore, their Riverwalk… what a pleasant community.

Looking for our next great project!

My fiancé and I just moved to town, and we’d love to get connected with a community of folks working to do good things.  Helping people breath life into their dreams is what we do, and we’ve got a whole arsenal of skills at your disposal.  We just finished starting a distillery up in Leadville, Colorado, and we’re looking for our next project!

Amy & Freddy

Amy & Freddy performed at the Duluth-Superior GLBTAQI Pride Festival Saturday, and they were hilarious. An Ethel Merman-style showtunes lounge act interrupted with crowd observations and gags – and once Amy engaged with the ASL interpreter on stage, the vaudeville was on:

“Wait a minute – you sign whatever I say??”

Duluth Cable and Internet Providers

I’m trying to figure out costs for living in Duluth. I am wondering which cable and internet provider most people use there. I see there is Comcast and Charter, their prices look different but I am wondering if one of them is better than the other as far as customer service, functionality, etc.

Day labor services in Duluth area?

I am helping my grandma move from the Duluth area at the end of the month. Since estimates on hiring a moving company from Duluth to Minneapolis are pretty steep, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on day labor services where we could hire a person or two to help with the actual loading of boxes/furntire into the truck, etc. Any recommendations are much appreciated.

Calling Bluebird Enthusiasts

If you are in good bluebird habitat, have had bluebirds on your property, and would be willing to help Wildwoods “soft release” four juvenile bluebirds, please email us (duluthrehabber @ yahoo.com) or Facebook message us. Soft release entails offering live mealworms a few times per day and calling the young birds back with a feeding call we will teach you. Please help us transition these birds back to nature. Thanks!

Disturbing Lake Superior “Scars”

Can’t say I have identified any chemical trails over the Twin Ports (maybe they know that only the lake can control the weather around here), but this sad image has a strong effect.

Is Duluth one of the “Cities where the most people have heart attacks”?

From USAToday:

Duluth, Minn.-Wisc.

> Pct. reporting heart attack: 6.2% (tied for 8th highest)
> Pct. obese: 26.9% (68th highest)
> Pct. who smoke: 19.6% (78th lowest)
> Median household income: $46,110

In many respects, people in Duluth were in better health than the country as a whole. For instance, the percentage of people with both high blood pressure and high cholesterol were below the national rate. However, nearly 27% of people surveyed were considered obese, higher than the 24.8% obesity rate across the country. Like most areas on this list, Duluth’s median household income was lower than the national median. In 2011, it was about $4,400 less than the U.S. median of $50,502. In addition, Duluth had a slightly higher poverty rate of 16.6% than the U.S. poverty rate of 15.9%.
