Superior Curling Club was fun
I spent Saturday afternoon watching friends play at the Superior Curling Club.
According to its website, the current club location was built “during the late 1980s.” “A modern new four sheet club was built at the Head of the Lakes Fairgrounds. Superior curlers worked out an agreement with the city and county on the funding of the club. The county and city contributed two dollars for every club dollar, and the curlers put in many thousands of hours in the actual construction of the new club.”
It’s a nifty facility, but it’s an even niftier sport to watch on a cold afternoon.
The Zamboni Explosion and Peterson Arena Fire of 2004
Peterson Arena on Grand Avenue in West Duluth was gutted by fire on Dec. 19, 2004. The image of the wreckage at left is a Bob King photo for the Duluth News Tribune, boosted from USA Today‘s story about the unfortunate and scary, yet still undeniably comical, Zamboni explosion. The fire marked the end of Peterson Arena, which served as the only indoor ice rink in western Duluth from 1971 to 2004. It was replaced by the Duluth Heritage Sports Center at Clyde Park, which opened in 2008.

College football’s coaching nun in New York Times
The story of Sister Lisa Maurer, who serves as a football coach at the College of St. Scholastica, is featured today in the New York Times. Maurer is a Benedictine nun with St. Scholastica Monastery in Duluth, which shares a campus with the College of St. Scholastica. She joined the ranks of the coaching crew this fall, after spending years as one of the Saints’ biggest fans. Maurer will be on the sidelines Saturday as the Saints take on Saint John’s University in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs in Collegeville.
Punkin’ Chunkin’
One of our holiday traditions the past few years has been to watch Punkin’ Chunkin’ on the Discovery Channel. I just read that it was cancelled for this year, which is sad and means we’ll have to find some other boob tube diversion that night.
Got me thinking, though: does anyone do this in the area?

Duluth Mystery Photo: Denfeld football players from 1951
Help name these Denfeld Hunters. The image above is one of three dated Nov. 29, 1951 that were listed for sale on eBay. The description read: “These three photos were of the football players from Denfeld High School in Duluth, Minnesota. The sign in the background says Public Schools Stadium. The photos are from 1951. Two of the boys are identified: Eli Miletich and Richard Wilson. Eli Miletich gained some local celebrity later in life on the Duluth Police force.”
So, who can name the other two gridiron greats from West Duluth?

Flat Track Derby Results

I am sorry I could not make it. I want to know more about the results. Please post!
Goodbye Big Chester

Grandma’s Marathon 2014 Double: Only One Dumb Enough
After seeing the post last summer about Eric Strand running the Grandma’s “Double” (3 a.m. from the finish line to the start, then runs the race) I’ve been waiting for Eric’s 2014 installment. Here it is, another excellent video showing a great inside look at the people of the race: the runners, the volunteers and the spectators. Good job, Duluth!
RollerDames end the season with energy
… if not with victory.
The Dames lost both bouts. But more importantly, we Rollerdames fans are losing some familiar faces. The following Dames are retiring this year: SoKo Rebel, Wright Around Ya, Killah Cleta, Lady Gotcha, Nasty Fantastic, Hook N Splatter, Janet Smackson, Jilly Willy, Crumpet Crusher, Little Miss Spooky.
I am surely a fan of the Dames, but the first time I met these athletes at Buffalo Wild Wings, I got shivers. They are really, really good at their sport, and they are really, really good as a team. Dames fans will miss them.
World Cup in Duluth
A friend of mine was asking where were the best public places in Duluth to watch the World Cup.
Dubh Linn is says that they will be “showing all the games” and are offering discounts to people showing up in their team jerseys. It was also the only place in Duluth mentioned in an MPR article.
That’s the only place I’ve heard of so far. Are there others?
Video Archive: Vikings vs. Eagles in 1978
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fztt8yJ42W4
From Metropolitan Stadium, Dec. 3, 1978. It’s the tail-end of the Purple People Eater years, and many of the Vikings’ top stars are starting to show their age. Nonetheless, the home team comes into this game 7-5-1, with a shot at the playoffs. We’ll save the spoiler remarks until after the jump.
