Help build new walkway at Enger Tower
The city of Duluth is crafting a new accessible walkway to the gazebo from the parking lot at Enger Park. The pathway will be completed prior to construction of the new gazebo. The public is invited to help out any day M-F from 8:30 to 2:30 p.m. or at these other times:
Wed, Aug 17, 5-8 p.m.
Thurs, Aug 18, 9-2 p.m.
Sun, Aug 21, 2-5 p.m.

Tree Planting Party!
ReLeaf Duluth! Help restore our canopy one tree at a time!
Monday, August 15, 5:30-8:30. Join tree commissioner and retired forester Jim Lemmerman and help plant trees in the East Hillside neighborhood. No experience needed, all ages welcome. Two grants were received to purchase trees — one from the DNR and the other from the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation. Meeting spot: the corner of N. 12th Ave. E. and E. Lake Superior’s chocolate color
I’m guessing it’s all the mud from the Wisconsin rivers that is causing our lake to turn a deep shade of brown. I’ve watched it slowly ooze its way across the lake all day. All that sediment can’t be good for anything. I wonder how common an occurrence this is to have this much water coming down rivers this time of year.
Stolen Trek Path Bicycle (East End)

Gravity on display in Duluth
Yesterday I was driving down some side streets near Chester Creek Cafe with my family when we watched a soccer ball cross the street in front of us. At first, it just seemed to be out on a walk, or a roll, I guess, as it headed down the street and on its journey toward the lake. A few seconds later a young man appeared from behind a fence and ran — looking for cars and being careful — after his ball. It was a close contest but the ball was finally intercepted a couple of blocks down the hill.
It got me thinking about the other hill-related events I’ve witnessed over the years and thinking serious work should be done in documenting such events. (Plus, I’m procrastinating on a big project I should be doing.) (more…)

Port Huron to Home: Bryan Hansel’s 800-mile kayak adventure photography exhibit and presentation
During the spring and early summer of 2011, Bryan Hansel kayaked from Port Huron, Michigan to Grand Marais, Minnesota. His journey took 45 days, and he covered 800 miles. On the trip, he traversed the two largest Great Lakes, averaged 22 miles a day, paddled in waves taller than a refrigerator, visited Isle Royale and even ordered pizza delivered to his tent. Bryan will exhibit print and digital images from his experience and talk about his adventures. You don’t want to miss this! Canoeing the Duluth area
Entirely not enough PDD attention has been devoted to canoeing small rivers in the area. Yesterday, we canoed the Brule, a formidable opponent when the water is low, any other favorites? Has anyone put in at Jay Cooke and gone all the way to the mouth in an aluminum canoe?

One of mine is the Kadunce River falls, the only way to access the base of either falls is to hike up river into the canyon.

Support a National Public Lands Day Event
In honor of National Public Lands Day, September 24, my brother Mike and I are going to spend 2 weeks paddling over 120 miles across the BWCAW documenting, collecting, and packing out all the trash that we find along the way.
We will inventory everything we find and create trash density maps to aid wilderness resource managers and environmental advocates focus education and clean up efforts within the BWCAW.

Parks Commission Presentation About Magney Snively Park
The Duluth Parks and Recreation Commission’s next monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 13. This public meeting will be held at the Parks and Recreation office located at 12 E. Fourth St., beginning at 4 p.m.. An informational presentation will be made by City of Duluth staff person Tim Howard regarding the transfer of the Levang property from the Nature Conservancy to the City for the purpose of expanding Magney Snively. A complete agenda for this meeting is available at the Parks and Recreation office. For more information, call Parks and Recreation at 730-4300.
Miller Creek Disc Golf Public Meeting
The public is invited to attend a public meeting at the Parks and Recreation office building/Central Hillside Community Center located at 12 E. Fourth St. (corner of Lake Avenue and Fourth Street) on Wednesday, July 13 at 6:30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the future of the Miller Creek Disc Golf Course. Among the issues to be discussed are: potentially moving/removing baskets, long term maintenance and trash collection and creating better playing conditions. Too nice out to work
I’d like to go swimming today but want to avoid the hordes at Park Point. I have two little ones and would like some sand if possible. Any recommendations? I had heard there was a hidden beach somewhere in Knife River but don’t know where.
