Sexhawk – “Duluth is Still Afloat (In Our Hearts)”

When life gives you lemons, Sexhawk gives you lemonade. And a stirring anthem about last week’s flood: “Duluth is Still Afloat (In Our Hearts)”

Campaign for two Rivulets videos

[This post originally contained an embedded video that is no longer available at its source.]

Video director Adam Barnick is running a crowd-funding campaign to produce two Rivulets videos.

Rivulets is the musical outlet of part-time Duluthian Nathan Amundson. (He still rents a place in Duluth, plays the Homegrown Music Festival every other year or so, and considers the Zenith City to be his “spiritual home.” Three Rivulets albums were recorded in Duluth, mostly at Sacred Heart Music Center).

Looking for musicians for a good cause

North Country Independent Living in Superior is looking for musicians willing to donate their time and talents at a picnic honoring our personal-care workers. Our mission is to empower people with disabilities and without our PCWs many people would be forced to live in institutions and not independently in their own homes.

If you are interested in providing some upbeat acoustic tunes while we celebrate our workers, please contact leeann @ northcountryil.org.

When: Wednesday, Aug. 1, noon to 6 p.m.
Where: Billings Park, Superior
Food and refreshments will be provided.

What are the top-five bands or music acts in Duluth?

Everyone loves a list so I was thinking of asking what people thought about the top 5 bands or music acts in this area. Not your personal favorites, but the top of the charts if we had charts. Getting a crowd and having great music.

I was thinking:
5. The Acceleratti
4. Toby Churchill
3. The Little Black Books
2. The Black-eyed Snakes
1. Trampled by Turtles

Bernie Larsen, Alan Sparhawk and DJ Burt Blackarach– “Bottomless”

Jambox – Tune it in

My 14-year old told me about this this weekend as we were walking the dog around the neighborhood. “There’s a video of a guy snowboarding off this wall, then down into the creek and into that tunnel.” We got an e-mail at PDD headquarters this morning with this link, sure enough, the last shot is just as my kid described. Produced by local clothing company Jambox and filmed at familiar sites all over Duluth.

“Duties” by Dead Guys

Last night Dead Guys released their debut EP, “Duties,” and it is now available as a free download at deadguys.bandcamp.com. Dead Guys is a local trio akin to early White Stripes and the Black Keys where raw rock meets gritty blues.

If you like what you hear, we’ll be appearing at Tycoons on Saturday, June 16, after Grandma’s Marathon alongside Dirty Horse.

James and Younger’s New Album

James and Younger have finally finished their album — Sleep in the Sea. It’s available for download at jamesandyounger. bandcamp.com. CDs will be available soon as well. Please support local music and the people who make it.

Vocals: Rochelle Luoma
Drums: Chad Amborn, Ethan Thompson and Jeramie Olson
Keys, vocals and percussion: George Elsworth
Guitar, vocals percussion: Nate Mattson
Bass: Ethan Thompson

Darin Bergsven – “Out of Nowhere”

A video shot while Darin Bergsven was recording his CD at Sacred Heart this spring. The CD will be available at shows, and he’s playing tomorrow morning, June 3, 10:30 am at Luce.

Looking for people who want to be in a music video!

We have a professional videographer shooting a HD quality music video for the comedy rap song “Hey Big Girl” featuring local artist Good Knight. We are looking for actors, actresses, models, dancers and anybody that wants to be a part of being in the music video, especially plus-sized models. This is going to be a fun, yet professional experience with potential for a lot of exposure.

This will be shot on location at Grandma’s Sports Garden on Friday, June 22nd.  If you are interested please email NorthernExposureMGMT @ gmail.com for further details.  Thank you!

Cello needs friends!

I recently got custody of a cello. And happily, I’m not nearly as rusty as I thought I’d be. Seventeen years of piano teaching has helped quite a lot!

Now I want to find other people to play with! I’m at about an intermediate level. Would love to put together a quartet, but if anyone knew of some sort of orchestral option, that would thrill me beyond belief. But quartet I think could happen. Or trio. Violas are always sort of hard to find.

Which reminds me. I am also looking for a violist to play Rebecca Clarke’s viola sonata with me on the piano. It’s been something I’ve wanted to play for years but have never started because finding a violist isn’t exactly easy!

Any ideas? Anyone want to come over and play?

Lost guitar pedals (Found!!)

UPDATE: Thanks to perfectduluthday.com, the sound guy at the Rex emailed me and said he found my pedals! Sure enough, one of the bands I share a practice space with accidentally grabbed it.

Instead of deleting this post, I will use it to illustrate how important PerfectDuluthDay is to our community. Thanks Paul & the gang!

Calling all interested Duluth bands

I am interested in booking some bands into my bar (Classic Hard Times Saloon in Bemidji). We hire bands from the Minneapolis area and fill in with a lot of great local bands. I would like to get a new mix, so if anyone is looking for a gig or knows someone who is, contact us on Facebook. Shoot us a clip of your band and or some music. All genres welcome.

PDD Shift: Kenspeckle Letterpress

Next up in our series of people at work, Rick Allen and Janelle Miller of the Kenspeckle Letterpress.

We interviewed Rick and Janelle while they were working to get pieces ready for their current show at Siivii’s Gallery in Canal Park.

Homegrown Origin Myth (2 of 3)

(When we last saw our heroes…)

Suddenly, the light was upon them!  Surrounded by flames 20 feet high!  The rebels cowered in fear and shielded their eyes.  A thundering voice boomed, “I AM STARFIRE!!!”

Then the light dimmed.  When they dared to look up, they expected to see a God-like creature.  But such a creature was not to be found.

Instead, there stood a pleasant looking young man in a flannel shirt. (more…)

Kickstart Mary Bue’s Art

I’m in the middle of recording my 4.5th record “Apple in the Ocean” at Sacred Heart Music Center. Moving back to Duluth from Seattle, this was one of my goals of returning to town — to record in that stunning cathedral and work with my talented musician/sound engineer friends and play that gorgeous grand piano. I’m proposing to you to help support my project — and I’m over halfway there! You can pre-order the record and get some other goodies too at my Kickstarter page.

Thank you so much for your support and it has been pretty awesome to be back here and reconnect with so many of you. Wonderful musical, artistic and community things are happening, just as I remember it!

Reflecting on Coolio in Duluth

Ten days before Homegrown 2012, Coolio came to Duluth. I find myself looking back and wondering how the hell I ended up at that show, standing in the back next to Jellybean Johnson, listening to a mid-1990s rap star talk about eating sushi at Black Water and how “Duluth bitches are all dimes.”

Trampled by Turtles @ Big Top not sold out

FYI — the Trampled by Turtles show at Big Top Chautauqua on June 15 is not sold out. I’ve heard a number of rumors that there are no more tickets left, but grounds passes — ‘rain or shine’ — are still available.
