Here’s a bit of what you’ll find on this week’s PDD Calendar:

Take it With You comes back to the Underground for their latest shenanigans, a denim-centric party goes down at the Red Herring, the one-act comic opera Trial By Jury is performed at UWS, the Heritage Center holds a skating event called the Gobbler Glide, country-rapper Big Smo plays the Sports Garden and a bunch of people named Watson become one at the Dudley Experimental Theatre.

The Christmas season truly gets underway with the arrival of Santa during the Christmas City of the North Parade, the Duluth Gingerbread City opens at the Nordic Center, the play The Underpants opens at UWS, Bentleyville is officially a-twinklin’ and it’s the Festival of the Season at the Duluth Farmers’ Market.

Tuesday is the 40th anniversary of the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald and there are several events to mark the occasion, a painter is remembered through a show of his work, the DSSO begins their Chamber Music Series, the last Union soldier to die (Albert Woolson, a Duluthian) is remembered, the crazy goofs in Putnam County are putting on their Spelling Bee and it’s time to Give to the Max.

Comedian Justin Caesar returns to Duluth to do some stand-up and show some films, Sage Francis lands at the Red Herring, the Social Disaster releases its first album with a Rex blowout, the latest contender for “best worst movie” opens at the Zinema, godlike genius Orson Welles is celebrated, skateboard decks are sold to raise money for skateboard parks and Gramma’s Boyfriend is in town.

Learn about your roots with the Twin Ports Genealogical Society, a new Duluth mayor (and more) is selected on Election Day, UMD is holding a lecture about the effects of mass incarceration on black men, the story of a famous ship that went down on a November not that long ago is told, Gaelynn Lea releases an album and the Duluth Explorers Club has its first meeting.

Learn to Curl, the dinner-theater show The Kitchen Witches goes up, a famous blockhead named Chuck stars in a musical, the DSSO meets local original songwriters and musicians, Jackson Browne brings his brand of Swedish black metal (j/k) to the DECC, a guy named Martin brings a ton of sex to St. Scholastica and the Chicken Hat Plays happen once again.

Beaner’s Central is throwing a costume party, Frank N. Furter and the gang are at the Underground, there’s a Masquerade Ball at the DECC, Studio 15 is having a Halloween party, R.T. Quinlan’s is putting on a Spookshow, the fifth annual Corn-i-ville is underway at Engwall’s Corn Maze and both the Red Herring and Pizza Luce have bills full of bands for Halloween, too.

Duluth extreme metallers Vitamin Death release an album, DanceWorks hits Marshall Performing Arts Center, Glensheen’s pumpkin-carvers (see above) display their work, One Roof Community Housing throws a fundraiser, the Minnesota Ballet celebrates a half-century in operation and a fundraiser for violence victim Matthew Rewald is happening at Mr. D’s in West Duluth.

Sarah Brokke opens two art shows at once, UMD Women’s Hockey starts off their season with a game against Mankato, the Buffalo House’s Haunted Shack opens for spooky business, Bethany Crisis Center holds their 7th annual Music & Dance Party, Disney’s Aladdin Jr. opens at the Duluth Playhouse, Boo at the Zoo 2015 continues at the Zoo and the Superior Spooktacular is a full day of Halloween activities.

The Zinema kicks off their October slate of Jody Kujawa-hosted horror flick offerings with the original Evil Dead, Amber Rose arm candy Machine Gun Kelly plays the DECC, at-large City Council candidates square off, Gaelynn Lea opens her music studio, The Barber of Seville opens in Superior, The Birds come squawking and scratching into Teatro Zuccone and Billy Barnard brings the jazz.

The Bottle Jockeys headline the Red Herring, there’s a corn-maze hootenanny, Oktoberfest is happening on Friday and Saturday, there’s a spooky art opening, Boo at the Zoo is back again and so are the Harbor City Roller Dames.

Lake-themed artwork is up for viewing this evening in the Zeitgeist atrium, Duluthians can hear from their City Council candidates, there’s an 80’s Dance Party at the Red Herring, UW-Superior is looking to help address bullying, UMD Theatre begins its 2015 season with Spoon River and Gruesome Playground Injuries can be seen by the public at the Underground.

The Halloween season is officially upon us with the opening of the Haunted Ship, pop-music wizards speak at UMD, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic (!) comes to town to talk about ranked-choice voting, the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra scores The Wizard of Oz, that industrial band from The Crow plays R.T. Quinlan’s, it’s BradToberFest time, again and Sacred Heart is tending to its organ.

Community Connect is a twice yearly event that connects people experiencing poverty and homelessness with housing, hygiene, IDs, employment, drug/alcohol treatment, voter registration, outdoor survival gear, child care and other vital services. Between 300 and 400 people are expected to attend the fall Community Connect on Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gimaajii Building, 202 W. Second St.

Beaner’s Central kicks off another week of live music that leads to an annual compilation album, Spike Carlsen chats about writing while he builds a bench, Choice, Unlimited is throwing an arts showcase at Clyde Iron, people can drink wine at the Zoo, kids can Minecraft with their peers at the Library and the Minnesota Ballet is having a ball.

The new Tobey Maguire flick opens at the Zinema, the ninth-annual Grand Traverse hike/run event takes place, the 16th annual Lester River Rendezvous recreates the fur-trading days, Artcetera 2015 lands at the DECC, Legacy Glassworks celebrates half a decade in operation with a big concert and Twin Cities “it” band Hippo Campus comes to the Red Herring.

It’s primary time, Take it With You returns to the Underground with a Chaperone Records-heavy ep, John Mark Nelson and Mary Bue play the Red Herring, the show The Foreigner opens at the Playhouse, Unplugged XIV gets underway in Grand Marais and John Prine plays the DECC.

Le Festival des Montgolfières à Duluth 2015 — that’s a hot-air balloon festival for the non-French, out there — hits Bayfront Festival Park, R.T. Quinlan’s bar celebrates 25 years in action with a two-day music slate, kids can sleep amongst the animals at the Zoo, Dancing at Lughnasa continues at Teatro Zuccone, the 2015 Chester Bowl Fall Fest happens and so does the NorthShore Inline Marathon.

The 2015 United Way Chili Cook-Off is heating up the DECC, the Duluth Art Institute is opening three new exhibitions, a man named Achilles will play his trombone at Weber Music Hall, Tony Dierckins presents his book on the famed Congdon estate, the Twin Ports Bridge Festival hits Bayfront Park and George Thorogood will bring his message of bad-to-the-boneness to Black Bear Casino.

Instrumental post-rockers Portrait of a Drowned Man and three other bands will rock R.T. Quinlan’s, the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra kicks off its latest season, the Engwalls Corn Maze opens to the public, the 2015 Lake Superior Harvest Festival is happening at Bayfront, 5k runners get stuff thrown at them during the UV Splash Color Dash and Big Top Chautauqua folds up their tent for the season.

Senator Amy Klobuchar comes to Barnes & Noble for a book-signing and reading, Yoga North celebrates their 20th anniversary with a week of free classes, bear-hunting season gets underway, the Superior Telegram turns 125 and Hedwig comes back to the Duluth stage, Angry Inch in tow.

UMD’s RSOP program is having an open house to show off all the gear they rent out and more, the new Noah Baumbach film opens at the Zinema 2, the annual Duluth Superior Pride Festival is taking place all day on Saturday (and so is the Super Big Block Party) and the Duluth Armory Music Festival is the big event on Sunday.

The Head of the Lakes Fair gets underway in Superior, the DPD meets with families in West Duluth, Access Music Therapy is having a grand opening, Blue Canvas Orchestra plays Big Top Chautauqua and the last River Rovers Nature Playgroup takes place in Billings Park.

John Gorka plays Amazing Grace, Movies in the Park is showing Disney’s Planes, the Northern Isolation festival is putting a ton of punk and hardcore bands up over three days, a man by the name of Jerome plays Teatro Zuccone, Kurtfest brings 40 bands to Eveleth and Lower Chester is having a centennial celebration.

Play a round of putt-putt to support Superior’s Old Firehouse, Vivielle releases their new album at the Red Herring, kids can make foil art at the Duluth Public Library, the latest episode of Take It With You is going down at the Underground, the Nerds are having another Nite at Teatro Zuccone and people with antiques can get them appraised at the Depot.

Kids 7 to 17 can get involved in sports activities at the Heritage Center, the comedy Over the River and Through the Woods opens at StageNorth in Washburn, the dragon boats are back at Barker’s Island in Superior and local DJ Edgewood Smith is remembered in a concert that will feature Low and more.

Farmers’ market season chugs along, with markets in Hermantown, Superior and downtown Duluth, Duluth MakerSpace is having a kids’ clothesmaking class, Randy Lee’s Big Time Jazz Orchestra plays the last of Superior’s Bayside Sounds concert series, Martin Zellar hits the Red Herring and Lord Stanley’s Cup is on display at Amsoil Arena.

William Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus and the similarly pie-concerned Sweeney Todd are both going up at the Duluth Playhouse, the Grill Wars of 2015 will be fought at Bayfront Park, the art fair Art in Bayfront Park will hit the same location and the Kraus-Anderson Bike Duluth Festival gets underway at Spirit Mountain.
