It’s a Wonderful Life!
On Saturday, December 5th Washington Studios Artist Co-op will host their annual holiday show, featuring an entire days worth of local entertainment and a member’s exhibit in the Washington Gallery. Handmade art and crafts varying from stained glass and jewelry to crocheted hats will be for sale from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm.
The entertainment schedule includes many of the performing artists who live at WSAC, featuring The Procrastinators, Russ Sackett and the 412 Band, and belly dancer Anna Ferguson. The show will also include co-op children’s artwork and an art raffle.
This event is a longstanding tradition for the community and fourteen-year-old artist co-op that resides in the renovated Washington School. More than 40 artists and their families live, work, and play at WSAC. Washington Studios Artist Co-op is located at 315 N. Lake Ave. in Duluth.
2nd Annual Open Studio
Duluth nature photographer Ryan Tischer is hosting his 2nd Annual Open Studio on Dec. 4,5,6 (Fri, Sat, Sun) from 10 am – 5 pm at Washington Studios Artist Co-op. 315 N. Lake Ave. – Studio # 403

“Precious Waters” – Minnesota’s Sulfide Mining Controversy
The short film “Precious Waters” which takes a hard look at the sulfide mining industry’s history of failed predictions and the potential impacts it will have on northeastern Minnesota will be showing in Duluth this week and next.

The Littlest Holidays Sale
Sale to benefit the Duluth Public Library. Mark your calendars! We are trying our highly successful Holiday Sale again this year. We will be at the Main Library on the Superior Street level on Monday, Dec. 7, 12-4 p.m. and Tuesday, Dec. 8, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. (or until we run out of things to sell). We will be offering Book Lover’s calendars, Holiday related books on cooking, crafts, and decorating, children’s stories and novels. Come to seventh annual holiday celebration of art, food and music at the Historic Trade and Commerce Marketplace at Hammond and Broadway in Superior. Off the Wall, Artist Market is in the Red Mug and North End Arts Gallery. Saturday dec. 5 is a building-wide open house, gallery reception in the evening, and live music after in the Red Mug. On Sat. Dec. 5 Washington Studios Artist’s Co-op is hosting “It’s a Wonderful Life” a three-tiered event with a members’ show in the Washington Gallery, All-day entertainment schedule, and handmade arts and crafts in the halls outside the gallery. We still have spots available for artists of all sorts, our main stipulation is that your art/craft must be handmade. It’s going to be “A Wonderful Time!”

UMD Fall Sustainability Fair
When: Wednesday, Nov. 4, 10-3
Where: UMD Kirby Student Center
What: Sustainability is the balance achieved when a society is able to provide for its own needs without compromising the needs of future generations. The bi-annual UMD Sustainability Fair has been established to highlight the progress of sustainability efforts within our community. The Fall 2009 Sustainability Fair will feature panel discussions and presentations focusing on the issue of food, in conjunction with the Superior Grown Food Summit which will be held at UMD on Saturday, Nov. 14. However, sustainability encompasses multiple, overlapping issues, including: education, energy, natural resources, government, economy, health, transportation and social justice. Public and private groups representing these facets will be present to showcase their progress.

Once again, Superior Street is coming out in full-force this Halloween night, and will undoubtedly be lined with zombies, sluts, slutty zombies, and probably even a Balloon Boy or two. Every bar in town has a “Halloween bash” and costume contest, of course. But here are a few events I’m aware of that sound like they’ll rise considerably above the average Halloween party, which is something when you consider that even the average Halloween party is pretty choice.
Feel free to leave any events I’ve missed in the comments, and I’ll add them to the list. They don’t have to be in Downtown Duluth or even in Duluth at all for that matter.
Most of all, have fun, be safe, and let’s all hope the lights don’t go out again this year.

“Things That Go Splash in the Night” — Fred Stonehouse appearance
Lake Superior Magazine hosts author/ghost chaser Fred Stonehouse at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the magazine’s office at 310 E. Superior St. (directly across from the Sheraton). Fred will share spooky tales from the chilly waters of Lake Superior, perfect for Halloween.

Lake Superior Writers Pre-Holiday Book Fair & Reading
On Saturday, Nov. 7, Lake Superior Writers will sponsor a Pre-Holiday Book Fair and Reading from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist community space, 835 W. College St., Duluth. This free community event will showcase area authors and give shoppers a chance to start their holiday gift-buying early. Books do make the best presents!
Writers such as Shelley Getten, Dianna Hunter, Yvonne Rutford, Ellie Schoenfeld, Kirsten Jacobson Stasney, and Marlene Wisuri will read and sign copies of their works. Participating publishers include Cloquet River Press, Clover Valley Press, Dovetailed Press, Holy Cow! Press, X-Communication, and others.
