Celebrate I Love to Read Month this February with Cozy Pajama Story Time at the Duluth Public Library every Thursday evening in February 6:30-7:15pm!

Children ages 0-8 and their families are welcome to come in their pajamas and enjoy a fun story! Story time is a great way to encourage a love of reading and learning! We hope you will celebrate reading with us!

Brooklyn singer-songwriter Kelli Scarr spent much of 2009-2010 recording and touring with Moby, including a collaboration for NPR Music’s Project Song. Scarr is currently touring in support of her new album, Piece, and she’s making an exclusive Northern Midwest appearance Feb 19 at the Park Theater, 15791 U.S. Highway 63 in Hayward.

Roller Dames “Heartbreakers Brawl”

Hello there friends and fans! Harbor City Roller Dames are inviting you to an evening of tough love on Feb. 19 at World of Wheels Skate Center in Superior. We will be hosting our Heartbreakers Brawl, a roller derby mash-up of Valentine’s Day and classic 1980s heavy metal. For the first time ever, it’s HCRD against HCRD as we split up into two teams for the night: Motley Cupids vs. Stuns N’ Roses!

Randy Lee Big Time Jazz Orchestra at Clyde Iron

This is powerful  Latin music from Chick Corea, the Stan Kenton Band, and others, displaying influences from samba, bossa nova, Afro-Cuban and more. Hear Kenton’s  “Malaguena” (ala bullfighters), throw in a funk tune and a few mellow  songs and you’ve got a great program. This full concert will raise money for Community Action Duluth’s Circles of Support to build connections and relationships across race and class lines in Duluth.

Thursday, Feb. 3. 7:30 pm at Clyde Iron, 2920 W Michigan St.

Tickets are available at the door, $5 for students and seniors and $8 for everyone else. See you there.

Valentine’s Day Party and Silent Auction

Twin Ports Action Coalition is hosting a Valentines Party and Silent Auction on Feb. 11. It will be held from 7pm to 12am. This event will be held at the Venue at Mohaupt Block – 2024 W. Superior St. There will be a DJ, a cash bar, and door prizes. Tickets are $7 for singles and $12 for couples. Twin Ports Action Coalition works on issues of homelessness and poverty. Review of Duluth Playhouse’s Production of Picnic

The Duluth Playhouse kicked off 2011 with William Inge’s Picnic, a drama that reflects on beauty and its uses, restrictive gender roles, and identity. Though Inge’s play grapples with such profound philosophical themes, it does so with plenty of sultriness and a surprising amount of fun. Chili and Shadow Puppetry?! Wha? How?

That is not a typo. If you weren’t in the know about this cosmic to-do, don’t worry. It’s tonight at Harbor City School’s auditorium. The Chili Feed is a fundraiser for something-or-other, and the shadow puppetry is being performed by Harbor City kids guided by (local) master puppeteer Jim Ouray. 5:30- Feed ($5), 6:30- Sleep-themed puppet show (free!).

I meant to post this last year, but I forgot. This is a picture that my daughter made in kindergarten. I found it in with some papers when I was cleaning her room and it just struck me right between the eyes. First, I thought it was all wrong: “What is that school teaching my daughter about Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr? I mean, she took away his whole essence, she’s stripped away his race, she’s missed the whole point …”

Dolly Parton’s 65th Birthday Party at World of Wheels
