Ecological Restoration

This Wednesday, April 27, starting at 7 PM at Hartley Nature Center (3001 Woodland Ave.) Paul Hlina, owner of Leaning Pine native landscapes who has spent many years growing native plants, preparing, planting and maintaining native plantings of all sizes, and conducting related research will talk on some more philosophical aspects of why and how we undertake ecological restoration.

From Paul: “I will discuss the idea of long term ecological restoration from the perspective of seeking out the balance between natural and human ecosystems.    Whose goals are we achieving, human derived or nature driven goals?  How do our human experiences, aesthetics, belief systems impact our restoration experiences.   I also will discuss there is no such thing as a no-maintenance restoration.  But that maintenance allows one to broaden and deepen the connection with your space.  As in native traditions, it turns the space sacred, instead of a burden to conquer.  There will be a lot of what I’ve learned over the years, about a continue march in living lightly on this planet.”

Join this great conversation organized by the Arrowhead Wild Ones Chapter and Hartley Nature Center.

Duluth endurance cyclists leave mark in Trans-Iowa

From left Charlie Farrow and Tim Ek (who, along with Jason Buffington and Jeremy Kershaw make up the Death Before Dishonor group) at last year's Trans-Iowa. Note the headlamps because they will be riding all night.

Two of Duluth’s strongest endurance cyclists completed an amazing feat today in Iowa. The Trans-Iowa is a two-day, 300-mile bike race on mostly gravel backroads that starts at 4 a.m. on Saturday morning and finishes when you either cross the finish line or quit, which many people do. To win, you have to pretty much ride without stopping for a little more than 24 hours. (more…)

Game Night at Collector’s Connection

Collector’s Connection used to be cramped, a place to stall while my wife wandered the mall. No longer! It’s become a destination. Last night, my wife and I played two games with a charming young couple of students and the Host, who did an excellent job of teaching us how to lose gracefully. The evening was free, though I bought a comic on the way out! (more…)

HCIS presents Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Harbor City International School will present A Midsummer Night’s Dream between Thursday, April 28 and Sunday, May 1. With the exception of the Sunday performance, which is a 2 PM Matinée, all performances are at 7 PM.  The theater is located on the second floor of the school at 332 W. Michigan St.  Admission is eight dollars for adults and three dollars for students.

Performance Description: A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a classic comedy of William Shakespeare’s. This particular performance takes place in the 30s, with settings, costumes, and music appropriate for the time period, with a certain emphasis on jazz and blues. The play intertwines three stories — that of a group of lovers turned astray from their state, divided by their uneven interests in one another; that of a group of workers who conspire to perform a play and are beriddled with conflicts as a result of their own incompetency; and that of  a squabble between the King and Queen of the faeries, who in their fight play with the emotions of the lovers and enchant the lead performer of the laborers. All these events revolve around the marriage of Duke Theseus and the queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta. The play is a comedy, renowned for its ridiculous humor and says a number of important things about the way we love and what is important in our relationships.

Duluth concert tickets — Buy Local?

I propose that the city of Duluth only issue event licenses under the condition that tickets must be purchasable locally. For example, do I really have to pay Ticketmaster $11.37 in handling fees for a $35 concert ticket at Bayfront Festival Park this summer? A 32 percent markup paid to a California company? I would much rather pay any ticket markup to a local record store or nonprofit. Or, directly to the city for that matter. Anything to keep the money in our community, not exporting it to a corporation in California. Maybe I am missing something?
