Friday at the world-famous Loading Zone Bar in Superior the Acceleratii are throwing another hillbilly time-warp fish fry and recording a live CD to be released this winter. This event is going to be nuts. Five bucks gets you admission and some fish & chips. This fish is damn good, people. Food at 9PM, music at 10PM. 24 Winter St. (take the High Bridge over to Hammond, left one block after Dan’s Feed Bin on Winter — all the way to the end). The Zone is cash-only and there’s no ATM. There’s not even a phone. But this is gonna be good. Here’s a link to the Facebook event page.

Hillfest 2011
“Livin’ in the Hillside”
Hillfest is a community event held on Sept. 17, from 3 to 7 p.m., followed by a Street Dance from 7 to 10 p.m.. It is a celebration of the people who live and work in the Central Hillside and East Hillside neighborhoods of Duluth, and will feature the following from neighborhood residents and businesses:
Food * Games * Live Music * Art * Crafts * Children’s Activities
The normally busy intersection of Sixth Avenue East and Fourth Street will be closed to automobile traffic during Hillfest. The reason for choosing this location is to unite East and Central Hillside neighbors on the very road that acts as a barrier between the two neighborhoods — Sixth Avenue East. Anybody is welcome to attend Hillfest, and is encouraged to walk, bike, rollerblade, skateboard, or use any other form of non-motorized transportation.
If you would like to get involved, or more information contact Dan at NHS Duluth by phone at (218) 727-8604 ext. 207 or by email at dollhoff @ nhsduluth.org.
Harbor Symphony
Do you (or a friend) have access to a boat (ship, tug, tanker, trawler, yacht…) with a loud horn or whistle? Do you play a loud, low acoustic instrument audible from at least 200 yards (Sousaphone, tuba, trombone, foghorn, chain saw, Alphorn, hammer/anvil, church carillon, or are you part of a drum circle or Dykes on Bikes)? Are you near Duluth-Superior on Labor Day Saturday and available to premiere a giant piece of music during DS Pride celebrations? We need your help!
Philip Blackburn, St. Paul based environmental sound artist, through an Artist Initiative fellowship from the Minnesota State Arts Board, is composing a Harbor Serenade for as many community participants as possible; all honking, blowing, hooting and tooting across the water (and a few on the shoreline). Book Signing Party for Swinging Doors, A Memoir by Quinlan Michael Hampston
Saturday, Aug. 20, 4 to 6 pm., at R.T. Quinlan’s, 220 W. Superior Street. Easy access and parking at 221 W. Michigan.
Mischief and mishap figure into Quinlan Michael Hampston’s hilarious stories of how a kid who couldn’t read grew up to be a man who would write a book. Funny, yet poignant, Swinging Doors suggests, without apology, that steering a zigzag course can land a guy in a surprisingly good place.
Hampston, an owner of R.T. Quinlan’s, chronicles his life growing up in Duluth, serving in the Navy aboard an aircraft carrier in the Western Pacific, Desert Storm and his life of a barkeep. Along the way, Hampston travels with a goofy but lovable bunch of characters – kids chasing trains and cows, sailors chasing skirts and bar buddies telling tales and chasing their next drink. Don’t Feed the Plants: Review of the Duluth Play Ground Production of Little Shop of Horrors

Originally, I hadn’t planned on reviewing Little Shop of Horrors, but I was so tickled by the preview show that I had to recommend it. The show works well with the venue: the intimacy of the Play Ground enhances the campy, B-movie qualities of the musical. Delightfully kitschy costumes, hair and make-up; excellent vocal performances; and palpable chemistry among the cast members make this a fun end-of-the-summer distraction. (more…)

Planning for Climate Change
Climate change is already impacting the U.S. Midwest with higher average temperatures, more frequent heavy downpours, decreased Great Lakes ice cover, and more frequent heat waves.
Projected future climate changes in the region include a likely rise of another 5-10 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100, continued increases in winter and spring precipitation, decreased summer precipitation, and a possible drop in Great Lakes water levels.
The region will likely face the greatest adaptation challenges along Great Lakes coasts and waterways, as this is where many significant economic and ecological impacts will occur as a result of a changing climate.
While climate impacts will vary regionally, it is at the state and local levels where critical policy and investment decisions are made for the systems most likely to be affected — water, land use, energy, transportation and public health and natural resources, as well as important economic sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, forestry, manufacturing, and tourism. By factoring a changing climate into planning decisions today, communities and agencies can avoid future costs.
Find out more at “Planning for Climate Change Impacts in the Western Lake Superior Region” on Thursday, Sept. 22, from 8 a.m. til 5 p.m., a workshop geared for planners and professionals, but open to everyone. The workshop will be held at the EPA Midcontinent Division (map) and costs $20, which includes speakers, lunch and materials. Registration is available online.
