Zenith City writers share their work
The Podium at Teatro Zuccone
Last night I attended a very special evening of area writers sharing essays, poems and stories at Teatro Zuccone. It’s really exciting to see this kind of event assembled. Kudos to all involved. If winter is the off-season for the Duluth arts and culture scene, you’d never know it by all the things happening in our community these days. Here’s a link to my review of the event last night and the writers who alternately made us laugh or think more deeply about the meanings of our lives, sometimes at the same time.
Duluth Underground Bass at UMD
Duluth Underground Bass is a new student organization at the University of Minnesota Duluth. For the most part, we really like bass music. Anything and everything with lots of bass and funky rhythms. Some of us like it so much that we put on parties and shows and such and try to share our love for the bass with other people.
We have done pretty well, but there is a lot of room for improvement. So far we’re hosting a monthly gig at Stargate Nightclub called BassGate. It’s on first Thursdays of every month and it’s 18+. My favorite thing about BassGate is that it’s for the bass heads. The regular crew doesn’t come out and we completely take over the club, have our own DJs play the music they want to play and we all dance how we want to dance. Everyone has a good time.
If anyone is interested in seeing what we’re about, come on out to February’s BassGate next Thursday. “Dress Your Best” is the theme and we’ll be blessed with selections from Andrew Koch, Matt Harris, Cam Dickison, Jimmie Townsend, and Jordan Berndt.
Igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, anthropic
Brian Klawiter taught an energetic class on the geology of our region at Denfeld High School last night. We learned about two dozen new terms for “rock” but more importantly, we came to understand the geologic processes that created the rocks around here… (more…)

Some of the areas most talented writers and performers come together for a night of storytelling at Teatro’s Zenith City Tales: Stories of New Beginnings. Silent woods, groomed trails, iced ponds, and snowshoe access to unique areas of Hartley await at the Candlelight Ski, Skate, and Showshoe event at the park.
Brother Ali at St. Scholastica

UWS Student Exhibition
The Superior Council for the Arts and North End Arts Gallery are showing University of Wisconsin-Superior student-artist paintings, weaving and sculpture until Feb. 11.
North End Arts Gallery is in the Red Mug Building at 1323 Broadway St. in Superior. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. T-TH-F-S.
Duluth Art Institute event was very special

Wednesday evening at the Depot there were four art openings in one … including the Member Show, and exhibits by Kathy McTavish, Steve Read and Emerging Photgraphers. Here is my take on the night. The DAI is a gift to our community in so many ways. Check in and check it out.
Fiasco Changes
Just a heads up: Friday night’s Homegrown Winter Fiasco has moved Murder of Crows (featuring Gaelynn Lea & Alan Sparhawk) to Carmody Irish Pub @ 11:30PM, and the Acceleratii to the Rex Bar @ 12:30AM. That’s why it’s called a fiasco, folks.

Can’t wait for Spring to get your local music fix? Homegrown takes over the town for their Winter Fiasco. There will be poster art on display with music at Prøve Gallery. Mary Bue and Bliss & Sitter perform at Sir Ben’s. Carmody plays host to the People Say Fox and the Crunchy Bunch. The new venue of Tycoon’s will have Murder of Crows and the Acceleratii. Next of Kin and Jason Wussow & Friends play at the Rex. All free and all awesome.

The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra performs pieces by deFalla, Rodrigo and Dvorak with Delicate Grace. Paul Metzger, Ring Toss Twins and If Thousands play at Short Circuit Duluth II at the Teatro.

Submissions for the 4x need to be delivered or postmarked by Jan. 31 in order to be eligible. Submitted prints have to follow one main rule: one side must be 4 inches! Save Ann’s Home! MLK Day march for housing rights
Background: Ann Lockwood is the owner of a modest East Hillside home. She walks with a prosthetic leg after a major medical crisis that also cost her a good-paying job. Ann is now at risk of losing her home to foreclosure by State Farm Bank, even though she is working again and able make consistent mortgage payments.
Please join us on Monday, MLK Day, at 10am to send this message from our community to State Farm: 1. cancel the sheriff’s sale of Ann’s home, and 2. provide Ann with a fixed-rate loan modification she can afford. Gather at 8th St and 7th Ave E, then march to the Washington Center to join the main MLK Day celebration.
This kind of people power is saving homes across the country, and we aim to do the same for our neighbors in Duluth.

Saturday is New Year’s Eve and there are tons of events going on around Duluth to ring in the New Year. Some of the highlights: The Peking Acrobats are joined by the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra. Dubh Linn hosts a New Year’s Ball with magicians, djs, fire dancers, prizes and more. Twenty five original acts take the stage at Beaner’s New Year’s Eve All Day Bash starting at 7 a.m. Dirty Horse, The Black Eyed Snakes, and The Acceleratii play at R.T.’s. Looking to end the year laughing? The Teatro is holding a New Year’s Night of Comedy with a special show, improv and more.

It’s the Last Night of the Bentleyville Tour so pack the kids up and head down for the last time. There will also be a fireworks display at 6:30.
