Celebrate the Equinox at Chester Creek Cafe with a set vegetarian meal and music by Nikki and the Ruemates. Support a good cause and listen to some talented women at the same time at the Twin Ports Female Acoustic Show.
Friday, March 23
Minneapolis musician Jeremy Messersmith plays at Tycoon’s. Dink Tank at the Movies takes on The Happening Friday and Saturday. Rabble rousers, the 4onthefloor and Big Wave Dave and the Ripples take the stage at R.T.’s.
Saturday, March 24
Folk singer Dar Williams plays at Sacred Heart. The Duluth Radio Controlled Club will host a Radio Controlled Airplane Show and answer questions in the Miller Hill Mall. Eight writers create eight one-act plays overnight and premiere them at The One Day Chicken Hat Plays at Harbor City International School.

Nerd Nite is back at the Teatro with topics ranging from My Little Pony to calculating Easter.
Thursday, March 15
Les Miserables opens at the Duluth Playhouse and runs until the 25th. Some of the area’s best chefs are coming together to kill you at the Death by Chocolate event at Greysolon which will raise money for Arc Northland.
Friday, March 16
Luce gets taken over by local bands covering various other bands tonight and tomorrow with The Ides of March. Respect Your Old Man Poetry Slam will feature music, food, a silent auction, and poetry (obviously).
Saturday, March 17
Get your Irish on at one or more events going on around town tonight. R.T.’s is hosting a St. Paddy’s Day Meltdown with Cars & Trucks, the Acceleratii and Equal Xchange. Listen to traditional Irish music at Clyde with McInnis’ Kitchen and more. Duhb Linn Irish Pub has a plethora of Emerald Isle events including music, a buffet (today and tomorrow) featuring Irish cuisine, a mashed potato eating contest, green beer, and the unveiling of a new microbrew.

Art Scene: Something’s Happening Here
Friday night there are three art openings within walking distance of one another: The Prove, Washington Galleries and Ochre Ghost. This morning my post at Ennyman’s Territory shared other happenings here. The Twin Ports arts scene is moving.
This week: Irish and Scottish music, midweek blues, hockey and charcoal art
Three Duluth-area high-school boys hockey teams are competing in the Minnesota state tournament in St. Paul this week. Hermantown and Marshall have games on Wednesday; East plays on Thursday. But there’s more to this town than hockey, in case you haven’t heard.
Charlie Parr is playing at Tycoons Alehouse with Devil’s Flying Machine twice this month. The first time is this Wednesday, the second is next Wednesday. (This is contrary to earlier reports that Charlie would be playing the Brewhouse on those dates.)
Also on Wednesday, Teatro Zuccone is screening the documentary film Pray the Devil Back to Hell, which documents a peace movement called Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace.
Kelly Thompson opens her solo art exhibition at Washington Gallery on Friday, featuring charcoal drawings and paintings created using a variety of media.
The trio of Ross Sutter, Laura MacKenzie and Danielle Enblom — collectively known as Northern Gael — will perform traditional Irish and Scottish music at the Quaker Meeting House on Saturday.

UMD Outdoor Gear Swap
The UMD Outdoor Educators Club’s 14th annual Outdoor Gear Swap/Fundraiser is coming up on Saturday, March 3. Bring your outdoor gear to sell during the drop off times, and/or come to the sale and take advantage of some great deals! Gear to help people enjoy the outdoors will be sold by students, community members and local businesses. 15% of the sale price is taken to promote outdoor education. It’s like a big garage sale for outdoor gear.
All in the Sports and Health Center. Link to a map. Park only in legal spots. Look for signs.

Life House and New Scenic Café partner to help homeless kids
Life House will hold its second annual Hors D’Oeuvres that Open Doors event at the New Scenic Café on Tuesday, March 6, at 6 p.m.
Hors D’Oeuvres that Open Doors is a special event that raises awareness and funds for the vital services Life House provides for homeless and at-risk youth in the Duluth community. (more…)

The Big E and I sent our kids to Lakeside Presbyterian Preschool and we think its a pretty neat place. Our kids are alumni, but one of the teachers there asked me to post this flyer in a nutshell:
Open House Thursday, March 1 5:30-7pm. Preschool for 3-5 year olds.

This week: Mustaches, poetry and hockey, hockey and more hockey
March Madness is nearly upon us, as the East Greyhounds, Marshall Hilltoppers and Hermantown Hawks boys hockey teams all battle this week for trips to the state tournament. Marshall plays Hibbing-Chisholm on Wednesday, East plays Andover on Thursday, and Hermantown plays Rogers on Friday.
In college women’s hockey, the UMD Bulldogs are in the WCHA Final Face-off at Amsoil Arena. They face the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday for the chance to play in the WCHA National Championship Game on Saturday.
In a weirder athletic endeavor, the Mustache March Run happens on Saturday. If you don’t know what that means, well, it’s really no more complicated than a bunch of people with mustaches (real and artificial) running on the Lakewalk. There will also be an after-race party at Pizza Luce featuring the Black-eyed Snakes.
Also Saturday, the Spirit Lake Poetry Series brings Todd Boss and Matt Rasmussen to Somers Lounge at the College of St. Scholastica. Rescheduled for March 24.
There are over 400 events in the PDD Calendar, and we fully expect you to take part in at least 350 of them, so study up.
Culture Zoo: Emerging Artists Exhibit Opens Tonight in Superior
With so many other things happening again this weekend, I thought it would be worthwhile highlighting what is sure to be an interesting exhibit titled, “Culture Zoo: Looking In and Out of Our Cage.”
The focus of this exhibition is to showcase emerging artists, reflect culture, and display art’s ability to quote the past, comment on the present, and look to the future. Artists include Vince Cody – Sculpture/Painting, Chelsea Morgan of Magic Box Photography – Photography, Christopher Selleck – Photography, Adam McCauley – Painter, Michael Smith – Painter, Jeredt Runions – Painter. Colin Wiita – Mixed Media.
Native American sculpture and painting, portrait and urban landscape photography, abstract paintings and mixed medium on canvas. Their work will fill the North End Arts Gallery at 1323 Broadway Street from tonight through April 21 which coincides with the Art for Earth Day Gallery Hop.

Whether single, sick and tired of the lovey-dovey couples, or just looking for some good music, Uptown Boys and Crew Jones play the Anti-Valentine’s Day/Transistor’s birthday bash at Tycoon’s. UWS’s University Theater brings Jack and the Beanstalk to the Manion Theater. Rhymesayers rapper Brother Ali plays the Mitchell Auditorium. I’ve always heard that Northlanders shut it all down in the winter and wait for spring, that not much is happening in January/February here. But you’d never know it by reading DNT’s The Wave, or The Reader. This weekend alone there will be five art events here in the Twin Ports, from Love Your Local Artist at the Superior Library to Love at the Snoodle Saturday eve… I’ve posted a rundown of where to go and what to expect at Ennyman’s Territory. Who knew ??? with the movie community all abuzz over the French film, The Artist,” the first silent movie in 80 years up for an Academy Award, that First Lutheran Church would be “trendy” this Friday night Feb 3 at 7:30 p.m. with the showing of the 1925 silent movie classic “Ben Hur: At Tale of the Christ” with the talented University of Michigan theater organist, Dr. Steven Ball providing some stunning improvisational musical accompaniment on the church’s world-class pipe organ.
