Duluthians are stepping forward to rebuild our community after the flood. Volunteers are needed at Chester Bowl tonight. Do you know of other organized clean up activities? Let us know.

Coyote releases their new album on Thursday at the Teatro Zuccone and, before he permanently skips town, you can see Marc Gartman play solo at Fitger’s Brewhouse on Wednesday.

Le Cirque Rouge Cabaret & Burlesque Show, founded by Duluth native Amy Buchanan, plays at the Teatro Zuccone on Friday and Saturday.

There will be cake. Friday marks 9 years of this little local idiosyncratic blog. Happy birthday, Perfect Duluth Day! See the people behind the avatars and raise a glass or two at Tycoons.

Make a hat! You’ve read about Emily Moe’s hat class here and in the DNT, now you can start making your own hat on Tuesday.

The acronyms among us are busy:

• CHUM (Churches United in Ministry) is having their annual Rhubarb Festival on Saturday and, in preparation for that, there’s an artisan jams, preserves, and condiments cooking class today.
• LOON (Lyric Opera of the North) presents The Mikado on Thursday and Saturday. Rumor has it that Ko-ko’s “little list” of people he’d like to execute has been customized and localized for this production by the fabulous Jean Sramek.

In case you needed more art in your life head out to Park Point for their 42nd Annual Art Fair this Friday and Saturday.

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

It’s like a literary Easter egg hunt! The Duluth Public Library Annual Book Sale begins Tuesday and goes through Friday. Break out those elbow pads and queue up.

Sing-along with Dr. Horrible and Buffy at the Joss Whedon Sing-along at the Zinema 2 on Wednesday.

Maria Bamford comes home to Duluth this week and performs at Mitchell Auditorium on Thursday, but you can also see her hobnobbing with Jeff Anderson at a fundraiser on Tuesday at the Zeitgeist Arts Cafe.

And, oh hey, so this next weekend there’s this quaint little foot race going on. Grandma’s Marathon runs this Saturday, so pull out your lawn chairs and renew your acquaintances with your pals who live on London Road. You can head down to the Big Top in Canal Park for music Friday and Saturday by Haley Bonar, G. B. Leighton, Retribution Gospel Choir and more.

Tuesday the 30th season of Chester Creek Concerts kicks off with McKinnis’ Kitchen.

Two plays by Tennessee Williams, Summer and Smoke and The Eccentricities of a Nightingale, open this week at the Teatro Zuccone. Williams wrote Summer and Smoke first, but wasn’t satisfied with it, so rewrote the same basic story in Nightingale. The Renegade Theater Company is presenting both in repertory fashion and lets you decide.

Goodbye, Blue Skies, an exhibit of work by Emma Rustan, opens at the Washington Gallery on Friday.

On Saturday you can Walk for Animals with Animal Allies down at Bayfront and you can get your gyro fix at Twelve Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church’s annual fundraiser.

United Way of Greater Duluth’s 17th annual Day of Caring is June 21. Hundreds of community-minded Duluthians will get outside and paint fences, landscape, lay bricks, clean warehouses and more at 31 local nonprofits. Every year the volunteer teams enjoy giving back and the nonprofits really appreciate the help.

If you’re looking to participate this year, there are projects still available. You can visit volunteerduluth.org and click on the Day of Caring logo to see what needs to be done and adopt a project. You can volunteer individually or with your friends, family, coworkers or classmates. Every volunteer will receive a free Day of Caring t-shirt.

Today is Memorial Day and that means cookouts and a big, old fashioned parade.

The Huskies have their home opener at the Wade on Wednesday! And if you can’t make that, they play the St. Could Rox again on Thursday.

The Duluth Superior Film Festival opens on Wednesday as well and runs until Sunday playing at various venues.

The Royal Family opens at the Duluth Playhouse on Thursday and runs for two weekends.

And you can polka until you can’t polka no more at the Chmielewski International Polka Fest running Friday through Sunday at Black Bear Casino.

To round out the week on Saturday Rubber Chicken Theater is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan with a live reading of the script at the Fitger’s theater featuring such luminaries as Mayor Don Ness, George Kessler, John Munson, Lawrance Bernabo and Brian Matuszak as James Tiberius Kirk himself.

Or, if you prefer, belly dancing. Desert Journeys is a showcase of belly dancing this Saturday at the Harbor City International School Theater.

A young gay man was assaulted in New Independence Township on Saturday evening after being confronted about his sexual identity at a party characterized as a send-off for graduating Proctor High School seniors. He sustained injuries from the beating that landed him in the hospital after being attacked by as many as 15 party attendees.  We are meeting in Proctor on Monday, May 28, 4 p.m., at the train on Hwy 2 to stand against hatred, to hold a healing space for Max and his family, and to provide support for all members of the GLBTAQI community throughout the Twin Ports.  We would love to invite you all and your friends and families to join us as we peacefully demonstrate against hate crimes in our area.

Duluth Dylan Fest dominates the calendar this week with many events in several venues, including a film fest, a panel discussion about Dylan’s legacy, and a concert on a train.

Tuesday you can laugh till it hurts at Laughing to Keep from Crying, sketch comedy inspired by our health care system at the Play Ground.

On Wednesday you can network about networking at the Zenith Social Media Marketing Conference downtown at the Holiday Inn.

It’s sort of like the Swiss Family Robinson in reverse. A family with two small girls live aboard their sailboat in the Great Lakes and Atlantic for a year. The book release of “Big Waves, Small Boat, Two Kids” by area writer Katya Gordon is this Thursday at the Fitger’s Bookstore.

Area writers and performers converge on the Teatro on Friday for another edition of Zenith City Tales with the story telling theme being about education this time around.

Today kicks off the free Monday showings of The Prisoner at the Zinema 2. It also kicks off Mondays with the Mayor. Coincidence? I think not. March into the mayor’s office and tell Don, “I am not a number!” I dare ya.

Speaking of numbers, ever wonder what that Donald and Daisy Duck salt and pepper set that’s been gathering dust in the back of your liquor cabinet was worth? Find out on Wednesday at the Antique Appraisal at the Depot. Also on that day the Wednesday Sailboat Races return to a great lake very near you!

On Thursday you can grab the Brewpub Bus and go to Tycoons, Thirsty Pagan and Carmody and taste three takes on the same ale recipe. And if you happen to see some people decked out in Victorian neofuturist garb, it’s not that you drank too much, it’s the Steampunk Expo at the Duluth Art Institute with the afterparty at the Rathskeller.

Saturday you can help clean up the St. Louis River and then watch our Roller Dames clean up in their match against the Bemidji Babe City Rollers. See what I did there?

Hey there, homegrowners. You recovering?

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week post-Homegrown on the PDD Calendar.

Tonight all you thirsty pagans can mark the sixth anniversary of a spot that has become an institution here in the Twin Ports in that short time. The Thirsty Pagan is celebrating with music, beer, and specials.

On Tuesday Red Green is bringing his north woodsy DIY humor to Mitchell Auditorium with his “Wit & Wisdom” tour.

On Wednesday you can head to Clyde Iron Works and take in a screening of Brutal Beauty, a documentary about the resurgent women’s roller derby phenomenon. Our own Harbor City Roller Dames are hosting. You can see a preview of the movie here.
