Duluth Artist Workshops/Studios?

I’m wondering if Duluth has an open or rentable artist workshop space?  I play with metals, so it’s big loud noisy art; a place where painters quietly do their thing isn’t going to be right for me.  A place with a rentable oxyacetylene torch would be even more awesome. I already sent a message to the Duluth Art Institute but got no answer, so I’m hoping the people here can be some help. I currently have a “studio” set up in my dining room in my apartment … I’m sure the neighbors in my four-plex would be thrilled if I did my grinding somewhere else!

So, if you know someone/somewhere that has the space, or even know another avenue I can poke my nose down, please let me know!

Arts Wisconsin’s Rural Arts Management Institute

From: Sam Black of ARAC Duluth and Anne Katz of Arts Wisconsin

The 5th season of Arts Wisconsin’s Rural Arts Management Institute 2011-2012 begins in October 2011. The resources, networking, and contacts gained from this experience are outstanding and invaluable, according to past participants. There are very few programs like this available for rural arts leaders — comprehensive learning communities that provide a foundation of knowledge and an enduring network of peers, friends and colleagues.

Romeo & Juliet and West Side Story Summer Theater Intensive

One musical, one Shakespearean classic; both tales of unfaltering romances that go against all odds. At the beginning of July the directors, Kate Horvath and Liz Larson, started working with over 60 students to teach all aspects of the show, including stage direction, backstage assistance, technical requirements, costuming and front of house. The casts alternate performances while the opposite cast runs all the technical aspects during the performance, creating a complete theater learning experience for the students.

West Side Story Performances:
August 12, 18, 20 at 7 p.m. and 14 at 2 p.m.
Romeo & Juliet Performances:
August 11, 13, 19 at 7 p.m. and 21 at 2 p.m.
Adults: $10 | Students: $8

The Wild Party

Renegade Theater Company Presents The Wild Party
Book, Music and Lyrics by Andrew Lippa
Directed and Choreographed by Jenna Kase

Welcome to the Roaring Twenties. This is the story of one wild evening in the Manhattan apartment shared by Queenie and Burrs, a vaudeville dancer and a vaudeville clown. In a relationship marked by vicious behavior and recklessness that mirrors the time in which they live, they decide to throw a party to end all parties. As the guests arrive, we meet an assortment of people living on the edge. Queenie and Burrs set out to make each other jealous, but Queenie begins to fall in love with her conquest named Black. After a long night of decadence, Burrs’ jealousy erupts and violence rears its ugly head.

Sex. Violence. Sin … and Gin. These elements, along with show-stopping choreography and serious vocal fireworks, combine to fuel this bold, bawdy and mesmerizing musical.

Cribbage at the Walker Art Center

The last time I ate at the Burrito Union, I had no idea they hosted a cribbage tournament. If I’d known, I would have bought a Starfire Pale Ale and signed up. I don’t live in Duluth anymore, but I’d like to play some crib with Duluthians (and even our neighbors in Superior).

I’d also like to invite everyone to a fantastic event at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis — on Saturday, August 20, the Walker’s Open Field program is collaborating with me on an event called Cribbage in the Field.
