Bigotry to Brook Trout: A Watershed Moment
Geoff Vukelich, who lives just north of Duluth, is the subject of the short feature “Bigotry to Brook Trout,” which is part of the International Fly Fishing Film Festival.
Synopsis:
Bigotry to Brook Trout features one man’s transformation from a life of ignorance and hate to quiet solitude on the waters of northern Minnesota. Hard truth and honest self-reflection parallel the beauty of Fall brook trout in this rare display of vulnerability and acceptance. Geoff Vukelich owns his past and speaks his truth, reminding us that we have the capacity to change our lives.
The traveling festival will hit Duluth on March 22 at Zeitgeist Arts.

Video: Rad Surfing on Stoney Point
Once again Brent Eliason of Ease Drones has captured some exceptional aerial video of Lake Superior surfers at Stoney Point. The footage is from Dec. 28.
“All the surfers in this video were killing it!!!” Eliason wrote in the YouTube description. “My favorite shots are between 2:20 and 2:40. At 2:20 you will see UMD’s Randy Carlson just dominating on the SUP.”

We come to the close of another year, and look back on some of our favorite videos that were posted on PDD. It really does get harder and harder to choose favorites with so much variety and quality these days. But we’ve looked through the music videos, the drone videos, the extreme sports videos, the travelogues, the absurd experiments, and we’ve got twelve here that feel like a pretty good summary of 2018 in Duluth. The Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” online programming includes a show called Bloodfeast, in which the New York Times crossword puzzle is solved while hosts Dave Bonowits and Max Simonet banter and strange musicians go about their business. Owls Club Big Band – “Carol of the Bells”
Certainly you’ve heard this tune based on a Ukranian folk song. This year we’re introducing a new Duluthian folk tale to go along with it. The music was performed at the Owls Club by the Owls Club Big Band; recorded and mixed by Darin Bergsven.
Reminder: Band registration for Homegrown is now open; the 21st annual festival will happen April 28 to May 5. Homegrown music mixes are available all year long through Bandcamp at duluthhomegrown.bandcamp.com.

Grandma’s Marathon 2018 Double: Gorilla’s in the Mist
Eric Stand — joined by Zach Strand and Andy Lohn — run the seventh annual Grandma’s Marathon Double. It’s a 52.4-mile trot along the shores of Lake Superior, starting at 2:30 a.m. at the finish line and running to the start, then back.
Denfeld Lip Dub 2018: “God’s Plan”
Released about six months later than usual and on a budget of $0, the annual Denfeld High School lip dub video is finally out, featuring the song “God’s Plan” by Drake.
Cloud Cult in Concert & Conversation at the Greene Space
Cloud Cult, a band formed by Craig Minowa in Duluth, performed at the Greene Space in New York on Nov. 1 in an event streamed online and available in the video above. Dawn Gross, host of the radio series Dying to Talk interviews Minowa between songs on the topics of love, loss and more.
