Geek Prom is Saturday? Oh my goodness, whatever shall I wear?
If you’re all out of skin-tight superhero outfits and Star Wars paraphernalia, the folks at Geek Prom always say “whatever your mom lays out for you will be fine.”
But if you’re looking for a snappy new dress or a stylish Cardigan sweater, the fine folks at Ragstock are ready to sort you out.

West Duluth Porcupine Hotel
On Wednesday I saw this porcupine high at the top of a tree on Raleigh Street, feasting away on bark. Then on Thursday there were two of them (one up high, one down low). (more…)

To those who know Bill
Message from Bill Meier:
“I’m in Vietnam and my e-mail and Facebook are shut down. Please tell anybody that cares I am doing great and only suffer from a bad case of too much sun. Lumpy or Lefty, please Facebook my mom and tell her the same.”

Pawlenty’s latest commercial not quite as funny as previous ones; still good for laughs
[This post originally contained a video embed that has since been removed from YouTube.]
This time it isn’t a book trailer; he’s announcing that he’s exploring a bid for the presidency.
Cudgel thy brains no more about it
Wise Fool Shakespeare‘s production of Hamlet closes this weekend. Would you like free tickets? Be the first rogue and/or peasant slave to comment on this post and you shall claim this outrageous fortune.

Colbert takes on Pawlenty’s dramatic ads
At PDD, we compared Pawlenty to Superman, among other things, for his chest-puffed image on his book cover. Stephen Colbert one ups us by comparing him to Brawny Man.
At PDD, we called Pawlenty President of the United States of Apocalypse after viewing his book trailer. Colbert says Pawlenty is “running for President of the next Transformers movie.” That one could probably go either way.
Blue Laws are Stupid, Post #4
The bill to allow retail sales of alcohol on Sundays in Minnesota is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Commerce Committee on Wednesday, March 16, at 10:30 a.m.
Quoth Sen. Roger Reinert of Duluth:
“Sunday liquor sale laws are remnants of a bygone era that no longer make sense in a 21st Century world.”
Emily Haavik – “Please Don’t Go”
Mark Lindquist turned me on to this song by UMD student Emily Haavik. When I went to her MySpace to listen, I saw “1 plays” on the song counter. So Mark must have been #1. I’m #2. Check it out. I dig it.
(Note: The original MySpace embed no longer exists; the SoundCloud embed replaced it in an edit to this post.)
Cirrus to be acquired by Chinese Company
Cirrus Industries, parent company of Cirrus Aircraft of Duluth, announced today it will be acquired by China Aviation Industry General Aircraft Co. of Zhuhai, China. The transaction is expected to close by midyear.
Cirrus will apparently continue to assemble airplanes in Duluth. Mayor Don Ness issued this statement:
“We anticipate that this merger will give Cirrus the additional financial resources and stability to ensure their recovery and grow operations and employment as the economy rebounds. I appreciate the assurances that Cirrus management has given us that operations will remain in Duluth; obviously that is our primary concern. We look forward to continuing the partnership with Cirrus not only to retain local operations, but also to grow jobs and support the company’s future success.”
Save the deer, shoot a dog
This ranks pretty high on my list of stunning news releases.
Minnesota DNR: Dogs chasing deer an annual problem
In summary: Between Jan. 1 and July 14, it’s legal to shoot and kill a dog that is pursuing a deer.
Holy crap.
