Pruning Time in Duluth
Since this old comic was available for a quarter at the Wallace Hankins Estate Sale, I thought I’d scan and post it, in case anyone finds it interesting or knows specifically what it’s about.
I would guess it’s from the 1930s, when buses began replacing streetcars, which may have resulted in cutting trees to widen roads, or maybe the tree is simply a metaphor for how the streetcar business would be hacked to death by buses.
The headline leads me to believe this was a newspaper editorial comic that the Park Point Community Club had printed on card stock and distributed around town to raise a fuss. The signature on the comic is John Harrison.

Another installment of the exciting game in which the person who is the first to identify where the photo was shot is the winner of great dignity and respect.

Pollard pulls in two 2013 Best of the Twin Cities Arts & Entertainment awards
Duluth got two nods from City Pages in its Best of the Twin Cities issue, and musician Eric Pollard was part of both. He’s the drummer for Retribution Gospel Choir and front man of Actual Wolf, bands that won for Best Live Artist and Best Songwriter, respectively.

Homegrown Band Publicity Photo Showdown: Charlie Parr vs. Tangier 57
With the Homegrown Music Festival coming up, PDD launched a series of polls two months ago, tournament style, to determine which Duluth-area band has the sweetest pic. It has come down to these two:

Tangier 57 – 59.5 percent
Charlie Parr – 40.5 percent
Tangier 57 is now the reigning publicity photo champion, and will carry the title proudly through Homegrown. In future weeks, title defenses will occur randomly as new band photo contenders emerge.

With the Homegrown Music Festival coming up, PDD launched a series of polls two months ago, tournament style, to determine which Duluth-area band has the sweetest pic. It is now down to the Final Four: Breanne Marie, Tangier 57, Southwire and Charlie Parr.

We broke it three weeks ago while fixing something else. Now that it’s fixed, the new problem is that it leaves an ugly gap in the left column if you’ve read all the recent comments. We’ll fix that soon and then watch what breaks the minute we do.

Be careful out there
DTA buses are sliding all over the place and bus service might be stopped before the end of the work day.
The Duluth Police Dept. reports that slippery conditions and poor visibility have contributed to over 20 crashes within the past two hours. The department is asking that residents stay home and only travel if necessary.
The zoo is closed. Goodwill is closed. Open skating at the Heritage Center is cancelled. The Duluth Parks and Rec clean up event at Chambers Grove Park is cancelled. Assume most things aren’t happening.
Homegrown Music Festival Field Guide 2013
Word has leaked out via Instagram that 17,500 copies of the Homegrown Music Festival Field Guide 2013 have arrived. Distribution might be slowed by the storm that is supposedly happening today, but — hot tip — the Electric Fetus is usually one of the first places you can find it.

Found cat in West Duluth
The poor dummy is high up in a tree on the Western Waterfront Trail just south of Indian Point Campground. I invoked the Fire Dept., but the location of the tree was determined to be too tricky for rescue, and, so I’m told, cats always come down on their own … eventually.
TBT at 10
As a companion piece to “Low at 20,” we congratulate Trampled by Turtles on 10 years together as a band. It was a wild night at Symphony Hall.

At Nerd Nite the hosts showed the Geek Prom poster on the PowerPoint screen and asked the crowd what was being parodied. For a group that doesn’t miss a reference very often, the audience was actually stumped for a few seconds and I swear I heard a few crickets before someone finally muttered “Talk dirty to me?”
Perhaps the creative arrow missed the target market on this one. Maybe the prom committee will stick to Star Wars references from now on and leave Poison out of it.
