Hartley Fall Open House
Thursday, Sept. 15, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Friends and neighbors of Hartley Park are invited to an open house event to learn more about Hartley Nature Center’s Environmental Stewardship mission in the park including past projects, current efforts, and future goals. This is also an opportunity for community members to interact with HNC supporters and share their ideas and comments on environmental stewardship of Hartley Park. Come to learn more and be heard!

Hartley Nature Center is looking to fill three fall environmental education internships in Duluth. Interns in these full-time, stipend positions spend time teaching EE to local school groups, interacting with park users, and continuing the mission of Hartley Nature Center. 2011 Youth Outdoor EXPO
Saturday, May 21, 9am-2pm
Youth ages 7-15 (and parents) are invited to join Hartley Nature Center and the McCabe Duluth Chapter of the Izaak Walton League for this annual free event. Activities include bird banding, birdhouse building, laser hunting simulation, fly tying and casting, and more. Youth receive a free Subway sandwich and Cold Stone ice cream. Mountain Biking in Duluth
Join us at Hartley Nature Center this Wednesday, May 4 for “Mountain Biking Opportunities in Duluth”- Adam Sundberg, president of COGGS, will present information on the expanding opportunities for mountain biking in and around Duluth. COGGS has been working diligently to provide sanctioned mountain biking trails for the citizens of this region. Program is sponsored by the McCabe Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and begins at 7 p.m.
Ecological Restoration
This Wednesday, April 27, starting at 7 PM at Hartley Nature Center (3001 Woodland Ave.) Paul Hlina, owner of Leaning Pine native landscapes who has spent many years growing native plants, preparing, planting and maintaining native plantings of all sizes, and conducting related research will talk on some more philosophical aspects of why and how we undertake ecological restoration.
From Paul: “I will discuss the idea of long term ecological restoration from the perspective of seeking out the balance between natural and human ecosystems. Whose goals are we achieving, human derived or nature driven goals? How do our human experiences, aesthetics, belief systems impact our restoration experiences. I also will discuss there is no such thing as a no-maintenance restoration. But that maintenance allows one to broaden and deepen the connection with your space. As in native traditions, it turns the space sacred, instead of a burden to conquer. There will be a lot of what I’ve learned over the years, about a continue march in living lightly on this planet.”

Spring at Hartley!
Heard the song sparrows this morning-SPRING is HERE! Young people (ages 2-5) and their parents are invited to join us at Hartley this Saturday, April 9, from 10am-noon for the Saturday Sprites Spring Sing Along. Duluth folk musician Robi Meyerson will lead this singing, dancing, and playing party. Cost is $10 per family. Call 724-6735 to sign up.
MN DNR license fee increase meeting
Join the W.J. McCabe Duluth Chapter of the Izaak Walton League for an informational meeting on the proposed MN DNR license fee increases. A representative from the MN DNR will give a presentation and answer questions relative to this important issue for the future of natural resource managament in Minnesota. The event will take place at Hartley Nature Center (3001 Woodland Ave., Duluth) on Wedensday, April 6, @ 7 p.m. Call 218-525-3745 for more information.

Soils and Spring planting prep!
If you’ve ever wondered “what do I need to do before I plant wildflowers to make sure they will thrive? do I leave the sod/existing vegetation in place or remove it? what if I have sandy soils? what if I have clay?” then this program is for you. It’s free and opne to the public.

Aquatic Invasives presentation
Join the McCabe (Duluth) Chapter of the Izaak Walton League for its monthly meeting and presentation at Hartley Nature Center on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. for “Aquatic Invasive Species” with Jeff Forester.
Let’s Talk Trees!
Ethan Perry, DNR Plant Ecologist and a former member of the Duluth Tree Commission, will talk about trees, how to identify them in the winter and the important functions they provide in urban landscapes. Following Ethan’s presentation Wild Ones members will be available with all their favorite books about native trees and shrubs to help those looking for more info to select trees and shrubs to plant at home.
When: Wednesday, Feb. 23. Socializing begins at 6:45 PM, program at 7 PM. We’ll get to the “free tree help” by 8 PM.

Community Clean-ups for Water Quality
Imagine Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes full of clean, clear, fresh water for future generations to enjoy. Together we can make this vision a reality. The Freshwater Society, the Friends of the Minnesota Valley, and the McCabe Chapter of the Izaak Walton League invite you to learn more about Community Clean-Ups for Water Quality, created to protect the water in our lakes and rivers. Presentation on Monday, Feb. 21 @ 7 p.m. at Hartley Nature Center.
Steelhead Fishing Class for Youth
Join the Lake Superior Steelhead Association (LSSA) and Hartley Nature Center for a great opportunity to learn about and try steelhead fishing. This event has eight openings for youth ages 12-15 to work with LSSA mentors to learn everything from equipment to technique. Female mentors available, so female youth are encouraged to sign up! Class includes: Two classroom sessions at Hartley Nature Center (3001 Woodland Ave.) on March 12 & 19, 2011 from 10 am to noon. Two field sessions at the Knife River, April 9 & 16, 2011. Equipment (if needed) will be provided. Participants will receive a certificate of participation and recognition at the LSSA Spring Banquet, April 16.

Hartley Nature Center and Wild Ones invite you to join us as we welcome author Robert Michael Pyle who will share stories and selected passages from his recently released book Mariposa Road. The event begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9 at Hartley Nature Center.

“Trail uses” this week’s theme at Hartley Nature Center
Ease back into your week … swing by Hartley Nature Center. There is fresh snow on the XC trails, and at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, an Adult Night Out presentation on Minnesota’s Hiking and Running Trails by Kate Havelin, who has written two books on hiking and running trails of Minnesota.
Apple Pressing at Hartley Nature Center!
Families with preschool-aged children are invited to come to Hartley Nature Center this Saturday, Nov. 6, from 10am to noon for a program on apples and apple pressing. The program is for adults and preschool age children and the cost is $7 for non-members participants or $4 for Hartley members participants. Class size is limited to 30 people.
