The Duluth Public Library Book Sale is this week with a presale for Friends of the Library on Tuesday, then the general public gets to see what’s left on Wednesday. It concludes with a bag sale on Friday.

Duluth Huskies baseball is in full swing this week with four home games Tuesday through Friday at Wade Stadium. In other sports action, the Harbor City Roller Dames have a double header this Saturday at the DECC to conclude their 2013-14 season.

Ring of Fire, featuring the music of Johnny Cash, opens at The Underground on Thursday and runs two weekends and LOON‘s Don Pasquale has only two performances at Lincoln Park Middle School on Thursday and Saturday of this week.

The Formal Age release a new album at Red Star on Friday, sharing the bill with Wino, WI and Turbo Rathvon.

Today is Memorial Day so go out and pay your respects to the dead before or after you fire up the grill. There’s a parade in West Duluth this afternoon without so many Veterans for Peace.

Zinema 2 will be showing a restored version of Orson Welles’ Othello on Tuesday for their Explorers Club series.

The Duluth Superior Film Festival opens on Wednesday and runs through Sunday with films in a variety of venues and, this year, the showings are all free.

Blood on the Tracks won’t get so much blood on so many tracks this Thursday, as construction is limiting the run, but you can still rock the train all the way from the Depot to Lakeside.

Other Desert Cities opens at the Duluth Playhouse on Thursday and runs two weeks. Inside tip: I’ve heard nothing but superlatives about this production.

You’ve seen them in Wicker Kittens, now you can jigsaw puzzle your way to fame and fortune in the first ever Duluth Puzzle Derby at the Depot on Saturday.

Take It With You is a live variety show taped for podcasting and the second episode is happening at The Underground on Tuesday with guests singer/songwriter Brianna Lane, Lake Superior Honey Company owner/operator Jonathan Otis and mayor/guy-about-town Don Ness.

The Duluth Farmers Market is open again on Wednesdays and Saturdays, which raises the perennial question, should a market for farmers be a “Farmers Market,” a “Farmer’s Market” or a “Farmers’ Market.” I think the middle one is right out, unless it’s just one farmer. If you think your media needs to get more social and you like to confer, you’re in luck. The Zenith Social Media Marketing Conference is at Greysolon Plaza on Thursday.

Local theater and film costumer, Sasha Howell, is staging her first fashion show, Spectacle, on Friday at The Underground. Sasha says her style is influenced by steampunk, Burning Man, Lisa Frank and horror.

And, on the subject of birds, Jan and Larry Kraemer and the Audubon Society are hosting a series of early morning warbler walks on Park Point on Tuesdays and Thursdays in May.

Nerd Nite is back on Wednesday at the Teatro Zuccone with presentations on Terry Pratchett’s Discworld, jumping into Lake Superior every month and time travel in the 1980s.

There is a Bike Rodeo on Thursday at the Myers-Wilkins Elementary School with bike inspections and safety training, just in time for Bike to Work Day on Friday with tune up stations at Minnesota Power Plaza, the Mayor’s Bike Ride starting at City Hall and the Mayor’s Luncheon at Clyde Iron.

Bob Dylan gets saluted at Sacred Heart on Saturday as a benefit for the Armory.

Zinema 2 screens Roberto Rosselini’s The Flowers of St. Francis on Sunday with a real live Franciscan friar to do a Q&A afterwards.

As people take their bikes out of winter hibernation, new bicycle repair stations along bike routes are being unveiled on Tuesday. But fear not, there is still open ice skating at the Duluth Heritage Sports Center on Wednesday.

Renegade opens their new comedy, Rx, about pharmaceuticals and love on Thursday at the Teatro Zuccone and it runs three weekends. Or if you prefer your comedy a bit more kinky, Venus in Fur opens on Thursday at The Underground and runs two weekends.

Jokes, Pokes & Chokes is a tattoo and piercing convention at Black Bear Casino this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The annual YWCA Mother’s Day Walk/Run is this Saturday and the deadline for registration is today.

And that’s not the only theater going on! Much Ado About Nothing opens at East High School on Thursday and All in the Timing opens at Marshall on Friday while Pride & Prejudice continues at Harbor City and Damn Yankees continues at UMD.

For the outdoorsy types, Hartley Nature Center is having an Outdoor Expo on Saturday and Camp Miller is having an open house on Sunday with all sorts of activities.

A special edition of the Pub Quiz at Carmody (written by yours truly) kicks off the festival. I’ll give you an inside tip, dear reader: Homegrown Field Guides will not be permitted to be open during the quiz.

The Run Smelt Run Parade is also this Sunday and there are three workshops this week for volunteers to help get the smelt queen ready.

Damn Yankees opens at UMD this Thursday and runs two weekends.

Eat Downtown Week, with its prix fixe lunch and dinner menus at participating restaurants, ends this Friday.

Hero/Villain/Savior/Scoundrel is an exhibition of portraits featuring Don Ness and Jim Carlson by various local artists. It opens at the Zeitgeist on Thursday.

Think of it as a catered yoga sing-along. There will be a Kirtan at Beaner’s Central on Friday.

“Inuksuit” is an environmental musical piece in which 66 musicians will be spread over the grounds of Glensheen Mansion and the audience wanders through the piece. This happens on Saturday.

Daniel Tobin performs “An Iliad: A One-Man Odyssey” at Mitchell Auditorium on Sunday.

Starting this week the Nordic Center has several classes on Scandinavian languages, including Norwegian, Danish and Swedish.

The Cole Porter musical, Anything Goes, opens this Thursday at the Playhouse and runs three weekends. The other musicals running in town, Hairspray at The Underground and Next to Normal at Teatro Zuccone, are playing to sold out houses and getting great reviews.

Dog Sees God is an unauthorized parody of the Peanuts gang in high school and it opens at UWS Experimental Theater on Friday and runs two weekends.

March is Food Shelf Month and you can support your local food bank at Taste at Fitgers on Friday.

The Minnesota Ballet presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the DECC on Saturday.

Diorama-rama, the biennial celebration of dioramas minuscule and huge, quaint and odd, is back Saturday night at Sacred Heart.

Think what church needs is more beer? Beer & Hymns, a monthly gathering for beer drinking and hymn singing, returns to Sir Ben’s on Sunday.

It’s championship high school hockey time with Hermantown vs. Marshall on Wednesday and Duluth East vs. Elk River on Thursday at Amsoil Arena.

Nerd Nite is back after months in mothballs with a return to its original venue, Teatro Zuccone, on Wednesday with nerdy presentations on 007, Sherlock Holmes and Star Wars collectibles.

For Duluth Public Schools it’s winter break. Looking for stuff to do with the young people in your lives this week? Duluth Parks and Rec is opening Pioneer Hall in the DECC Wednesday and Thursday for Turf Time, where kids can play on indoor turf, and there’s open ice skating at the Heritage Sports Center Monday through Friday.

February’s not a great time to go to the Boundary Waters, but it’s a great time to drink beer and learn about the history of the Boundary Waters. You can do both at Bent Paddle Brewery this Wednesday.

February is a great time for the Birkebeiner, however, and related events for that run Thursday through Sunday.

Next Fall, a play produced by the all new Son of Peter Company, opens at the Teatro Zuccone this Thursday and runs two weekends.

Winter Dance Party is a fundraiser for the Armory at Greysolon Plaza that harkens back to a concert back in 1959 where a young Robert Zimmerman heard Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. You can get all nostalgic and support the Armory on Friday.

On Saturday you can get all raucous and rowdy with the Dropkick Murphys at Black Bear Casino as part of Twin Ports Brewfest or you can get all mellow and bluesy with Greg Brown at Sacred Heart. Your call.

Sara Mowchan hiked the Appalachian Trail, if you know what I mean! No, she actually literally hiked it. You can hear all about it on Tuesday as part of Duluth Pack‘s Outdoor Adventure Series.

It’s midwinter, so why not stroll around the DECC and look at boats, motorcycles and recreational vehicles? You can do just that Wednesday through Sunday.

Private Eyes opens at The Underground on Thursday, a play with a fantastic cast, and afterwards you can head down to Pizza Lucé for the Transistor’s 10th Anniversary/Anti-Valentines celebration.

For Valentine’s Day proper, Friday, there are a wealth of activities to attend, including a fundraiser for LOON at the Northland Country Club, a spaghetti dinner at Amazing Grace, and dinner and comedy at Dubh Linn.

And on Friday at Teatro Zuccone Jonathan Manchester is remounting his one man show, Everything You’ve Done That Hurt Me, which was one of the most talked about shows of 2013. It’s a 20 page break up letter found in the street in front of his house.

The Odd Couple opens on Thursday at the Duluth Playhouse with the actors playing Felix and Oscar switching roles every night, which means I’m going to have to go and see it twice because, frankly, Jason Scorich and Jody Kujawa are amazing actors.

Chester Chat is a series of TED talk-like presentations at Glensheen. This Thursday the focus is on regional arts with presentations by Sarah Brokke, Anne Dugan and Jennifer Webb.

Cloud Cult returns to Duluth to play Clyde Iron on Friday.

The Liar, a play by Pierre Corneille and translated by David Ives opens, opens at St. Scholastica on Friday and runs two weekends.

Awesome Fest, a fest of awesomeness, runs Friday through Sunday at Mont du Lac with outdoor winter sports, indoor winter drinking, music, a costume contest and more.

The DECC will be a great place for people watching on Saturday as the refined DSSO crowd going to their concert of Bach, Barber and Brahms at Symphony Hall meets up with the Justin Moore fans going to Amsoil Arena. Post pics.
