Jani Lane found dead in his hotel room
Lead singer for 1980’s hair band Warrant was found dead at the Woodland Hills Comfort Inn in L.A. last night. Jani Lane was 47 years old and was probably best known for the hit “Cherry Pie.” The cause of death is unknown.
Maybe a band at this years Duluth Tribute Fest, at Bayfront Park Aug. 26-27, will cover a Warrant song or two in memory of Jani?

One of mine is the Kadunce River falls, the only way to access the base of either falls is to hike up river into the canyon.

I went on a little paddle Saturday afternoon to see if I could track down any of those “tall” ships.
I found a couple and I can confirm they are tall.

The Minnesota Pint Law – HF 703
Today the House Commerce committee endorsed HF 703 (aka The Minnesota Pint Law …or Surly bill, if you prefer), the bill allowing Minnesota breweries to sell pints of their own beer. There is still a ways to go before it becomes law, but the bill will continue through the legislative process. Surly Brewing says, “Thanks to the committee members for their support, and also to all of you for getting behind this bill and moving it forward.”

G. Love & Special Sauce at Clyde Iron Works on April 27
First Ave. is announcing G. Love and Special Sauce with special guests The Belle Brigade will be performing at Clyde Iron in Duluth on Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Tickets on sale this Saturday, January 29 at 10:00am. I am assuming via Ticket Master but I do not see that show listed as of yet on ticketmaster.com.
“G. Love’s new album, Fixin’ To Die, is set for release on February 22nd on Brushfire Records. Recorded at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC, and produced by Scott and Seth Avett (The Avett Brothers), this new body of work is arguably G. Love’s most sincere and candid work to date.”

Minnesota Deer Hunting Opener 2010
I come to you from my tree stand near Cotton. Curious how you Northland hunters do this opening weekend 2010.
I harvested a small buck and have seen a few doe. But otherwise pretty quiet, hence the reason I am posting while I try to pass the time. I know it’s ideal to have snow opening weekend but this weather makes it easy to sit up in this tree longer.
Be safe and good luck!
Minnesota Grouse Hunting
Has anyone been out early-season grouse hunting? I’m curious how people have been doing. I have seen decent numbers around Duluth and up the shore.
Minnesota North Shore Fall Colors Report 2010

Typical MN Fall Color Peaks
The Duluth/Minnesota North Shore fall colors are expected to be great this year! Typically the peak happens sooner if you go inland from the shore. The colors right on or near the shores of Lake Superior tend to peak a little bit later.
See the the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website for more info.

Duluth native Rya Ehle releases first EP – Table No. 9

Duluth native Rya Elhe who now lives in Nashville recently released her first EP titled “Table No. 9”.
Growing up in Duluth, Minnesota, Rya Ehle never got used to the 40-below wind chills that blew in off of Lake Superior each winter. It was there that her 18 years of classical piano training began at the young age of 4. At age 6, her passion for songwriting surfaced in compositions titled “Curious Frogs” and “Death of the Bees.” “I remember wanting to be just like Beethoven,” Rya recalls, “and when I found out he’d started writing at age 4, I remember thinking I’m already 6, I need to catch up!”
