Homegrown Banners
It’s that time of year again, the time when we magically change the secret folder that makes random silly pictures appear at the top of the PDD page. We’re looking for your Homegrown photos! So follow the same guidelines for submitting photos, but send us Homegrown-related images. You know, people drinking beer, playing rawknroll, hanging out, scans of your long-form birth certificate, and so on. We’ll rotate homegrown images during next week’s festivities.
Mmmmmm. Monorail.

Personally, one of my favorite episodes.
Soon, we will never leave the house
Google plans to do for art galleries what it did for maps and street view.
I can’t wait till I can Google my groceries.

Chester Bowl ski lift fixed
People with kids may have been following the progress of the chairlift repair at Chester Bowl this week. Monday night, hydraulic fluid was shooting out of the top motor and the hill was closed. There was some concern about fixing the equipment and getting parts which dated back to 1974 or earlier.
Just in time for winter break, the announcement was made by Thom Storm that the lift has been fixed.
“As of this afternoon, the new chairlift clutch is installed, & the lift will be open again on Dec. 26th at 11am. A huge thank you to the city of Duluth Fleet Services & Park Maintenance staff, and Tom Kasper, for their extra efforts in getting the lift running for Christmas vacation.”
No-so-high-speed decision making
Google is still deciding which city will receive Google Fiber. They were originally going to announce the decision by the end of the year, but now they say to look for an announcement in early 2011.
PDD Gift Guide 2010
One way to feel good about taking part in the hyper consumerism of the holiday season is to shop locally. That’s why your pals at Perfect Duluth Day have again compiled a gallery of gifts produced by the hands and brains of your friends and neighbors. Click on the pics for details about each item.
Just like the 2009 guide, the fabulous showcase below is by no means comprehensive. List your own suggestions in the comments. (more…)
Mad Monster Party
Just in time for the Elections Halloween, I stumbled across Mad Monster Party. I’ve seen a lot of Rankin/Bass stuff, but have never even heard of this one. This is a making of, split into two parts. (more…)
Halloween banners
If you’ve got fabulous Halloween photos, it’s Halloween banner time. But hurry, ‘cuz I shoulda had this call out a couple weeks ago. We’ll start putting the Halloween banners up as soon as we get enough to rotate.
Halloween banners must follow the same guidelines as the other banners. Basically, the photos have to be cropped to 960 pixels wide by 167 pixels high. The Perfect Duluth Day logo will be added by PDD’s art department.

Anybody have a recommendation for a good tile person?
Scenes from Fall Fest
Thanks to everyone who stopped by the PDD Canopy of Joy yesterday. It was a good day at Chester Bowl. Sunshine. Pan flute. Cheese curds. Matching puppies.
New PDD Bumper Stickers
I love this time of year. The leaves may be falling, but the Perfect Duluth Day sticker harvest has just begun. Stop by the Perfect Duluth Day booth at Chester Bowl’s Fall Fest this Saturday, Sept. 18, from 9:30am – 4:30pm to pick up your own free Perfect Duluth Day bumper sticker.
This is a brand new batch of stickers with a slightly different design than the original. (If you have an old sticker, you will officially be stuck in the past after Saturday.)
The PDD booth will be on the right side as you enter the park from Skyline, about halfway down the row.
Weather should be good, but the rain date is Sunday, Sept. 19, same time.
If you can’t make it to Fall Fest but still want a sticker, send a S.A.S.E to PDD.

GPS Help
I’m thinking about getting a handheld GPS. We’d use it hiking, maybe try geocaching with the kids and when paddling. So if was waterproof and usable in the car, that’d be great, but not necessary.
Anybody have recommendations or have one they want to get rid of?
One more week to apply for PDD sales position
Don’t forget, the deadline for the Perfect Duluth Day sales position is Friday, June 4th.

The Bitter Spills — “The Old Clyde Road”
Here’s another video from Monday night’s Homegrown Music Video Festival, in case you weren’t there. It’s Josh Carlon’s fantastic animated video for “The Old Clyde Road” by The Bitter Spills.
Boundary Waters? Nah, this year, let’s paddle Nebraska.

When I was growing up in Nebraska, “tanking” was not … um … a thing.
I went tubing several times, but never tanking.
And I guess I got tanked.
I hope Nebraska doesn’t steal all of our tourists away.
Homegrown Banners
This year during Homegrown PDD will be featuring Homegrown-related photo banners. If you have photos to submit, we’d love to see them and possibly put them in the rotation.
e-mail your JPEG file (960 pixels wide by 167 pixels high) to:

If you need a refresher on banner specs, there’s info after the jump, as well as a slideshow of photos from last year’s homegrown.
Countdown to spring
The ski hill at Chester Bowl is scheduled to stay open through this weekend, but it looks like Mother Nature may not be patient and cooperative. Already this weekend, the creek started flooding the bottom of the hill. So if you’re interested in taking or watching a waterskiing run at the Bowl, today might be your day. The lift is open from 4:30 – 8:30 tonight (Monday 3/8). The next scheduled day the lift is open will be Thursday, but that’s a long way away. Lift tickets are $5 at the concession stand. While you’re there, pick up a nifty Chester Bowl Hoodie or long-sleeve T-shirt at the concession stand.
Ski Jumping at Chester Bowl Sunday
OK, so nobody’s going off Big Chester, but there will be a basics of ski jumping demonstration Sunday at Chester Bowl.
I believe anybody can try – registration at 11:30, bring your own alpine skis and helmet. Jumping from 12:30 – 2:30
Ski Jumping at Chester Bowl
You know you’ve always wanted to see somebody go off those jumps at Chester Bowl, now you can.
Just in time for the Olympics, learn about Duluth’s world-class ski jumping history, and support both Chester Bowl and WDSE public television at the same time. Come take in a movie and hear some stories from Chester’s ski jumping legends. Kid-friendly early and late showings, conveniently overlapping the Paul Lundgren Happy Hour right upstairs.
