Tony Bennett
This Week: Schurke, Cirque and turk(ey)

Though it was just Halloween, and it may seem like it’s already the Christmas season due to the fact that halls everywhere are decked, holiday music is already running 24/7 on Kool 101.7 and seasonal commercials have taken over televisions for nigh on two weeks, it’s actually Thanksgiving that’s on the way.
Here’s a bit of what you’ll find in the Gobble-week edition of the PDD Calendar:
Adventurer Paul Schurke is giving a talk at Mitchell Auditorium on Monday, The Road Kill Boys are at Clyde Iron on Tuesday, and Cirque du Soleil is at the DECC on Wednesday.
Carve up some pre-holiday laughs with the cut-ups at VIP Pizza’s comedy night, hit the Gobbler Glide skating event at the Heritage Center, and win some meat at the Rustic.
On Turkey Day itself, enjoy some free parking, run off some pre-meal calories, hit the DECC for the Thanksgiving Buffet 2014 and get some pie and Chuck at the Zinema.
And, after the veil of Black Friday lifts, there remains much to do in the Twin Ports over the weekend. Head to the PDD Calendar for all the stuff(ing) one could ever want.
This Week: trains, brains, automobiles and more

Here’s a bit of what you’ll find on this week’s PDD Calendar:
On Monday, MnDOT is holding a public meeting on the Minnesota State Rail Plan. Get all the trains your brains can take.
Tuesday brings performances from the Brasil Guitar Duo, a little bit of magic at the West Duluth branch library, and the latest installment of Take it with You (which features the fresh-off-Prairie Home Companion Sarah Krueger, who also plays at the Red Herring, this week).
Charlie Parr’s a busy boy — in addition to appearing on the above Take it with You bill, he’s also doing this, this and this.
But perhaps the biggest event of the week is the revamped Christmas City of the North Parade, which will hit parts of Superior Street it hasn’t hit for the first time in over a decade. Add to this the Lake Superior Magazine 35th anniversary open house, the Northern Explorers gear swap and a long list of other events, and you’ve got plenty to tuck into.
This Week: Sun Kil Moon, Santa on a Sleep Number, Skiing and more

Here’s a bit of what you’ll find on this week’s PDD Calendar:
There’s a big gig happening at an odd location, as Sun Kil Moon takes the stage at Karpeles Manuscript Museum with Low as openers on Thursday night. Across town, the Little River Band plays the Clyde. On Wednesday, The Arrowhead Story releases an album, Dan Israel plays Fitger’s Brewhouse on Friday and the DSSO teams up with Lyric Opera of the North to stage Carmen on Saturday.
‘Tis the season: skiers already know that Opening Day happens at Lutsen Mountains on Saturday and Santa tries out a Sleep Number bed up at the mall on Friday.
Pugilism boosters should hit the Friday Night Fights at Grandma’s, ice skaters should hit the Heritage Center and skateboarders might want to check out the “Plys With Purpose” exhibition.
Add in a PAVSA art auction, some stand-up comedy and Super Mario, and it’s a full week. Learn more by visiting the PDD Calendar.
This Week: elections, games, a tree, the Fagbug and more
Here’s a bit of what you’ll find on this week’s PDD Calendar:
Halloween is over, and it’s time to vote on Tuesday. Just don’t take the Oliver Bridge to get to your local polling place.
The games are afoot in the Twin Ports, with a Firefly-themed night, some Casual Magic happening at Dungeon’s End and Board Game Night and Casual Heroclix at Rogue Robot.
In diversity news, the Fagbug and its creator will be visiting to raise awareness of homophobia, And Baby Makes Seven is at the Dudley and the photography show Diversity opens at the Tweed.
Kick out the jams this week with Mary Bue, the “postmodern string” sounds of Hot Buttered Rum and Eisenstein meets Dosh at the Zinema.
Theater geeks should mark their calendars, as Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? opens at Teatro Zuccone and The Tempest continues at St. Scholastica.
Finally, now that your paper skeletons and ghosts are packed away, get a glimpse of a White-House-bound tree to get yourself in the mood for Christmas. Yes. It’s that time. Already.
This Week: Halloween, plays, gigs and more

Here’s a bit of what you’ll find on this week’s PDD Calendar:
Halloween week is upon us, and there are lots of frights to be found. Both Glensheen and Fairlawn mansions are doing flashlight tours, the Buffalo House is in the home stretch of its Haunted Shack, Renegade is throwing a Halloween Dance Party, Bridgeman’s is having a kids’ costume party, the Duluth Heritage Center is putting on a Boo Bash, Evil Dead: The Musical is still in action, and the Haunted Ship is still haunted.
Non-spooktacular events include an in-studio PlayList taping, an Adam Sippola/Rachael Kilgour gig, Dirty Knobs’ Zeitgeist Experiments continue, Shakespeare’s Tempest is brewing, and Mark Mallman brings his brand of pop to Pizza Luce with Wolf Blood and The Social Disaster.
This Week: scares galore, meatballs, lectures, flicks and more

Here’s a little bit of what you’ll find on this week’s PDD Calendar:
Ghosties and ghoulies are in abundance, this week, as the scares get ramped up in anticipation of Halloween. Evil Dead: The Musical is in action at the Underground, Glensheen has a few days worth of chills planned for its Jack O’Lantern Spooktacular, and Gooseberry Falls is offering creepy campfire tales.
Saturday’s the biggest day for frights, with a Terror Train, a Field of Screams, a Corn Maze, and a Haunted Shack, among other terrifying delights. (And don’t forget about the Haunted Ship, of course.)
Not everything this week is of the scary variety, though: get some Swedish meatballs on Tuesday, hear Egyptian scholar Dalia Basiouny perform her one-woman show on Tuesday and lecture on Wednesday, celebrate five years of Zeitgeist Arts with a flick, and see the District 7A State Representative candidates square off on Tuesday.

Cars & Trucks’ “Theatre Stardusk” now available digitally
We have capitulated to the demands of the marketplace! Our new album “Theatre Stardusk” is now available on Bandcamp in any digital format you could hope to have. Anthony Bennett — Hello Cruel World
Visit anthonybennett.bandcamp.com starting right now to download Hello Cruel World, a 15-track album of bits and bobs and odds and ends that I’ve been accumulating for some time. It’s acoustic-type pop/rock/indie music, and it’s my first solo album. For the benefit of your wallet, it’s also free. There’s a bonus Christmas song on the site, too. Happy holidays.
The DOY Podcast, Episode Two
In the second installment of DOY, we go “Behind the Music” with one of Tony’s earliest and most formative recordings, Nate relives church-function sexual discovery, and Jody weighs the importance of his dog’s testicles. Other non-factual topics range from reptilian shapeshifters to Box Car Willie’s lust for children and a mysterious Hardy Boy named Nan. (more…)
The DOY Podcast
The DOY Podcast is a comedy/chitchat/whatever podcast. The very first episode features local raconteurs/comedians/ actors/musicians/television hosts/et ceteras Jody Kujawa, Tony Bennett, and Nathan Carlblom talking, singing, telling jokes, being gross, being vile, and just being. DOY is not recommended for children or people who get all freaked out by dirty stuff.
Please give DOY a shot, if you’ve got some spare time where your ears aren’t booked. It may be just what your drums have been craving. And keep checking back for Episode Two and beyond. The idea is to do at least one of these a month.
Cars & Trucks: Album 3 Kickstarter Campaign Ending Soon
Just about a month ago, the Kickstarter campaign to fund the recording and release of the third Cars & Trucks album went live, and the entire thing was 100% funded within 36 hours. We here at C&T HQ were beyond thrilled. But while the project is indeed funded, we want you to know there are still a few days to preorder any of the remaining categories. The project ends Friday at midnight, but, until then, you can still put in for the 3rd C&T album (on limited-edition vinyl with free download!) and all kinds of other stuff that won’t be offered again. Check out the NSFW video starring Jody Kujawa, look at the levels, see if you feel like getting involved. Thanks!

Seed Math digital reissue
Over a year in 2003-2004, I put out four limited-edition Seed Math albums, one every three months, each corresponding to a season. The music was mostly a hodgepodge of four-track fuckery, kinda like Ween or something. I’m rereleasing all four of these in digital format as a run-up to the release of the new Seed Math album (coming sometime before summer). These rereleases will all be free for the taking. The first of four is out now. Please, won’t you expose your taste buds to this Whitman’s Sampler of lo-fi Casio-rock jams? And, if you like any of it, tell a pal?
RIYL: Ween, NIN, Beatles, Melvins, Zappa, Beck, Flaming Lips, shit like that.
See you later.
Tony
Free Music from Anthony Bennett
Hi, everybody. I just wanted to let you fine Nazi-and/or-Tall-Ship-loving-or-hating folks know that I’ve got a site now where you can download some of my songs for free in a number of formats. It’s anthonybennett.bandcamp.com, and I’m going to be posting all kinds of stuff there, over time. Please, if you would, venture over there, see what you think, and if you like any of the tunes, forward the link to someone. Sorry for the spam-flavored post, but, with the impending death of the CD, us muso-types have gotta figure out new ways to get this stuff out in the world. Have a wonderful Wednesday. – Tony
