For a few weeks starting mid September, the fall leaves in Duluth are at their most vibrant. Maples turn around Labor Day and birch and poplar closer to Lake Superior begin to turn in early October. Hike the North Shore or head to the top of the hill for a marvelous show of red, burgundy, orange, yellow and gold.

Today’s hike near Finland was full of surprises. I set out to capture the sunrise, but when it wasn't quite coming together, I launched my drone—and this stunning scene unfolded behind me. The vibrant fall colors blanketing the hills paired with the fog rolling through the valley were absolutely breathtaking. It was one of those perfect North Shore mornings where nature offers something unexpected and beautiful.

One of my favorite scenes to witness as a landscape photographer is watching the first bits of light stretch across the land. The sunrise casts a golden light across the scene, illuminating the tops of the trees with a soft, warm glow. The light enhances the vividness of the autumn colors, especially on the tree canopy. It feels like the sunrise is breathing life into the landscape.

Fall colors are just starting to show up on the North Shore. There are pockets of maples that are really starting to shine at the higher elevations! The shoreline hasn’t really started to change yet, so there is no need to panic if your trip is still a couple weeks out. I’d expect inland maples to peak next weekend, and the shoreline to start peaking the following weekend.".
