Protests and riots in the Twin Cities spread to Duluth on Saturday. The death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer spurred the actions, which were mostly peaceful in Duluth. The notable exception was an incident at the Kwik Trip convenience store on 27th Avenue West and Superior Street in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

This edition of Selective Focus features photos culled from Instagram of protests in Duluth.

Today’s pictures are of those who came prepared with kindness for all. At the beginning of the gathering we were approached by different very kind people that were handing out water bottles (because it was hot & we’d be walking a bit) free masks (because that was a requirement of the protest was to abide by the rule of wearing a mask in big crowds) and signs to hold if we didn’t have one. They even announced that they had first aid kits if anything were to happen as we marched. I took these pictures for people to see the deep level of kindness that is within these protests. — #blacklivesmatter #kindness #duluthmn #duluth #minnesota #minnesotaphotographer #minnesota_captures #onlyinmn #photography #canonphotography #canon #canonusa #newyorktimes #authenticduluth #duluthnews #stribduluth #stribminnesota #blm #minnesotaexposure #mn #mnphotographer #protest #georgefloyd #strongertogether #perfectdayinduluth #10kviewsminnesota #icpconcerned #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #julesrosephotography". instagram.com Instagram instagram.com Instagram instagram.com Instagram 48 likes, 0 comments - duluthreader on May 30, 2020: "Over a thousand people took to the streets of Duluth to peacefully protest the murder of George Floyd, as well as institutional racism. The group is protesting the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody on May 25. On Saturday afternoon, the peaceful protest moved from Memorial Park in West Duluth to the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial in downtown Duluth and then to City Hall prior to the interstate being blocked. #duluthmn #georgefloyd #minnesota #wdionews". instagram.com Instagram 23 likes, 5 comments - a_nichols23 on May 31, 2020: "I was out covering the Protesters last night in Duluth. 95% of it was peaceful until it got to the Kwik Trip on 27th Ave W. Photojournalism practice and historical documentaries. It was a surreal atmosphere to be in. I also have video and more photos on my page. I am fine, even though I found myself inadvertently in the middle of the largest scuffle and only had one rock almost bean my head. 😝. Full descriptions are on my photo album on my Facebook page. The Police arresting a protester was after they had thrown rocks and were attacking the cars as the police were trying to leave. They had originally showed up to break up an assault on a Kwik trip employee by a few protesters. #protest #georgefloyd #duluthmn #minnesota #photojournalism #canon80d #exploremn #news #capturemn #blackandwhitephotography #lakesuperiorbnw contact me for use.
