A moment of silence for the forested hillside…
I’ve long been entertained that they picked Duluth of all places for that feature.
I think this article is useful reading alongside the 1870 photo:
“THE LAKE SUPERIOR RAILROAD.; Arrival of the Inauguration Excursion at Duluth–The City and Its Surroundings–Its Present Appearance and Its Future Glory–Revolution in the Carrying Trade of the North-West.”
