Postcard from the Duluth/Superior Interstate Bridge
This undated postcard, published by the Illustrated Postal Card Company of New York, shows the Duluth/Superior Interstate Bridge, referred to on the front of the card simply as the “Duluth and Superior Bridge.”
The Interstate Bridge opened in 1897 and for many years was the only bridge crossing the St. Louis Bay between Duluth and Superior that could be crossed by automobile or horse and carriage. The Oliver Bridge opened in 1916, followed by the Arrowhead Bridge in 1927. The Blatnik Bridge was built in 1961 to replace the Interstate Bridge. The Bong Bridge opened in 1985.
Parts of the Interstate Bridge still exist as a fishing pier on Rice’s Point in Duluth.
The Illustrated Postal Card Company operated from about 1904 to 1914. It primarily utilized German printing firms for its halftone and chromolithographic cards.
