Bob Dylan’s Spirit Mountain Adventure
Bob Dylan arrived in Duluth for a holiday ski party at Spirit Mountain on Dec. 20, 1975. The ski hill had just opened one year prior.
Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn and promoter Barry Imhoff joined Dylan in the weekend of skiing by day and partying by night, according to Louie Kemp’s memoir Dylan and Me: 50 Years of Adventures. Also part of the fun: Kemp and Baez got into a food fight at the Chinese Lantern restaurant.
Roger McGuinn told No Depression magazine in 2018 that Dylan displayed swiftness on the slopes at Spirit Mountain.
“He’s fast,” McGuinn told the quarterly roots music journal. “I was a beginning skier on the intermediate slope going down cautiously. I look to my right, and Bob goes vroom right past me.”
