I just got back from a mid-week trip to the Arrowhead, so allow me to assuage (never used that word before) any fears about missing the colors.
The color report maps you see may lead you to think most of the northland is awash in yellows and reds and will be gone next week, but really it’s just the maples that are peaking (as of yesterday), and it’s highly variable from one hill to the next. Lutsen and Oberg Mountain are always the first to go, and spectacularly so, but there are plenty of areas where maples hang on longer.
Birches and aspens often go overlooked, but they usually change slower and last longer than maples, showing off their brilliant golds into mid-October.
Long story short: right now is a great time to chase fall color, but don’t panic.
