Although the St. Louis River was mostly frozen over, I came to Jay Cooke hoping to capture some open, flowing water in a section that is normally a raging torrent. No open water was to be found, but what did present itself was quite unique - a few towers of river foam, continually bubbling up then freezing, as an underwater volcano forms an island. This one had to be 10 feet tall!

Like every other photographer is talking, weather was brutal with -20F temp (-40F windchill😱) Saw a few other photographers out there and shooted +1h. Witnessed amazing smoke forming from the lake from blue hour to golden time.
I was wearing 4 layers top, 2 layers bottom, 2 layers for head, and snowboarding gloves, but I still felt wind hitting my fingers and legs. It was most extreme experience for me for sure🥶 Every views were worth a try. I’m grateful to be able to witness all!
